The "play"

Okay, one last highlight I promise. Later tonight the humorous posts resume.

But this is that wacky play I talked about. It happened ten minutes after I got on TV for the first time in ten years.

  2. Hey Ken - I was on the road and it took a bit for me to recognize your voice - lots of fond memories of your work with Dave Niehaus the first time around.

My question is this: if Froemming had got it "right" (that is Beltre safe, Guillen gets him on the second swipe), the results would have been the same (well not the scoring, but the end result 3-2 M's), right? What if Beltre had been called out for running outside the basepaths? Same?

Enjoy your blog, btw - like your play calling, a refreshing change.

  3. From this high definition You Tube video, it looked like he touched second to me.

  4. Same here. Maybe when YouTube HD 1080i comes out, we'll get a better view of Beltre's hand and the bag.

  5. Beltre was CLEARLY safe. Froemming botched the call. If Beltre were tagged out or called out for leaving the basepath (which he should have been) then it depends on whether the runner crossed the plate before or after the out was recorded.

Since the appeal and out at second came after the third run had scored it counted.

In looking at endless replays, Beltre was safe at second but was tagged out by Guillan and left the basepath so should have been ruled out for that too. Froemming blew the play three ways.

  6. And you think cricket's confusing.

  7. btw not only was Beltre clearly safe, but Froemming called him safe. If Beltre hadn't touched the bag, there's no way Froemming gives the safe call. So he didn't botch that. However of course he later said that Beltre hadn't touched the bag, thereby botching up the only thing in the whole play he got right.
(..and how could cricket possibly be this much fun??)

  8. Thanks for posting the clip. It's one thing to read about it and another to see it. (now if someone can just explain the Angels roasted helmets, I could truly be released...)

  9. Fabulous. I asked for this yesterday and here it is...

    another instant request!

(My DJ voice loses something when typed out.)

And he was out of the basepath.

  10. Much better than "What the fuck just happened?"

"Folks let me take a moment to remind you that Jim Leyland gets that smooth complexion with Parliment cigaretts."

  11. MLB doesn't like it when you post clips from games. I know. I've done it. They've all been taken down like this one. :(

  12. Hey Ken, my twin Ryan and I emailed you the other day after coming across this blog. Just wanted to tell you again that it was great to hear you back on an M's broadcast. It revived some good Mariner's memories.

Ryan and I were recalling a particular game when you were analyzing how every announcer has a unique method for calling the long ball. I think you were using Niehaus's "And that ball was belted, deep to left field, and it will fly away...My oh my!" as an example, when you came up with "Helloooooo!" It was great. You then proceeded to give examples of when you would use the call. "So if Jay Buhner hits one outta here, HELLOOOO! Or Edgar Martinez belts one over the fence, HELLOOO!" Fantastic.

I gotta tell you, for years, my brother and I would shout "Hellooooo!" after a Mariner hit a homerun. Not everytime, mind you (that'd be a bit overkill). But, every so often we'd keep that Levine legacy alive. Hellooooooo!
