Actually, and I am not a LuPone fan at all (I know too many people who have acted with her to whom she is the total bitch diva of all bitch divas), but I have to say that was the most electrifying perfomance of EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES I have ever seen. (And Ive seen a lot of them.) Musically it was shrieking, howling, and ugly, but dramatically, Arthur Laurents finally got it the way he's wanted it for 50 years, terrifying. You could immediately see how deeply insane Mama Rose is, and how terrified Louise and Herbie are of her focusing her evil eye on Louise. Finally the sunny optimism of those lyrics shone with their true irony, that this is a moment of horror.
I was thrilled by it, and I can certainly see why she won her Tony tonight.
Whoopi on the other hand, the best I can say is, she could have been worse, but I'd hate to think how.
And how depressing to see John Waters delivering boring banter, when he, unscripted, is a thousand times more engaging.
Megan Mulally's "I've just been screwed 5 ways from Sunday" look while singing DEEP LOVE from YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN was very funny.

ReplyDeleteAnd it was nice that they gave Patti Lupone something in her key, so that we didn't have to endure her shrieking. A little of her goes a long way.
