I also draw cartoons...

It's picture day. I've also dabbled in cartooning. Here is a pen & ink drawing of the movie AMERICAN GRAFFITI I made several years ago. I used real sophisticated equipment to capture this photo -- my iPhone, which I'm still learning how to use. Hope it looks okay. Or that you can see it at all. If you can't recognize any of the caricatures it's the iPhone's fault.

  2. Nicely done. Makes me want to watch the film again. Not a bad idea, since I haven't seen it in ages.

  3. They have this thing called a "Scanner". You put your sketch in it, and you have a lovely postable copy.

That said, and speaking as someone who can NOT draw AT ALL, It looked pretty damn good to me.

  4. Really, Ken, you should wear clothes if you're going to shoot into reflective glass. (Made you look.)

Having seen this in person, it's nothing short of gorgeous.

  5. It's on a large poster board framed. Hard to scan.

  6. Very Hirschfeldian in style, but then, I had to spend another half hour looking for the reflected naked Levine. Had you been swimming?

Truly impressive Ken -- the drawing, I mean.

  7. See - you have something to fall back on, if this writing/sportscasting/blogging thing never works out...you can go to birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, sit in the sun all day at street fairs!

My brother in law actually does this, and makes decent coin doing it. A few years back he networked with people from Japan, and will go over there for like a month during some of there holidays to work! It ends up paying for his transportation and expenses, and has enough free time to do some sightseeing!

  9. Not bad at all, Ken. You are quite the renaissance man!

  10. Wow, Ken. I hope you'll be selling this on Ebay and giving us a chance to own an original Levine.

  11. That's keen!

    Just thinkin'....

I bet you'd be hot as a political cartoonist, particularly because of your talent for capturing the essence of humanity in dialogue and story. Transferring that to a single issue-based frame or two, for you, I bet would be a snap. Find an journeyman artist to flesh out your sketches...and, Leonardo, you'll have yet another successful career!

    'Way to go!

Do more and let us see 'em.

  12. And to think I never sent in the matchbook with my rendition of Bambi. I could'a been a cartoonist.

  13. Mort Drucker, who drew the original poster for "American Graffiti" (and illustrated its MAD Magazine satire of same), is probably quaking in his boots. Nice job, Ken!

  15. What do you think I could get on Ebay for a Ken Levine-illustrated poster selling the Grass Roots at a UCLA dance, circa 1968-69? As though I would ever part with it...

  16. Whoever has that Grass Roots poster, email me. I'm curious as to who you are.
