...where the National League Playoff Series is now underway. Before the game some goofy guy from the Jimmy Kimmell Show was walking around the field in just a towel. I'm sure hilarity ensued. No flyovers, no boy in a balloon -- just Billy Ray Cyrus singing the "Achy Breaky Star Spangled Banner". 50,000 people were disappointed it wasn't his daughter Miley.
A giant flag was unfurled that stretched from foul pole to foul pole. Fox Radio's Ben Maller wondered, "What do they do with it the rest of the year?" It took about fifty people to get it off the field, although Rick Monday could have done it himself.
It was 80 degrees at game time. Tomorrow it should be 90. In Philly on Sunday 40 and rain. If MLB plans on having playoff games well into October they should provide domes.
I'll be co-hosting Dodger Talk after the game on 790 KABC from the Baseline Box Club on the first base side. Stop by... if you can still walk.
Who do you think Fox is rooting for in these two championship series? Rupert Murdoch is ripping hearts out of employees and presenting them as a sacrific to the Gods to ensure a Yankees-Dodgers World Series. So if there's a Phillies-Angels Fall Classic you know it's residual karma from airing "Who's Your Daddy?"
I'll be going to Philadelphia with the team. It would be fun to meet some of my Philly readers.
Gotta go. They're about to serve cupcakes.
From TV's perspective, Philly vs. Anaheim wouldn't be a bad consolation prize; at least it wouldn't be Tampa Bay or Denver involved against a big eastern metro area, as was the case the past two years. (Though I sense that unlike the Red Sox, the Phillies don't count to TV execs because most of their fans went to public colleges.)
ReplyDeleteActually, with no offense to all the good people of SoCal, Fox's nightmare would be Dodgers-Angels, the 2000 World Series in reverse...though this time, no one would watch east of Palm Springs instead of west of the Delaware River.
wv: "imenerse" -- a mass dunking (performed by Sun Myung Moon, perhaps?).
When we spent a weekend in Dallas two years ago for the Cowboys-Patriots game, we made a concerted effort to avoid the State Fair that Saturday, not because of the Texas-OU game, but because Miley and her dad were going to be there with 50,000 screaming teenage girls.
ReplyDeleteThen we walk into the Stadium on Sunday after a five-hour tailgate party, and there's Billy Ray singing the National Anthem. I pin Dallas' latest downturn in fortunes to that moment.
When San Francisco played Oakland, there was a major earthquake. Let's hope it isn't Los Angeles-Anaheim, if only to avoid dislodging some tectonic plate or other.
ReplyDeleteI think there's a LOT more residual karma coming after Rupert Murdoch than just one bad sitcom.
ReplyDeleteThat was an exciting game last night. Lidge seems to be back in form. Ken, if you need any Philly advice, let me know.
ReplyDeleteWV alitation - a certain "mile high club" activity on a flight to Italy.
I don't like the "Thanks Mr. Scully, but we'll take it from here" thing, as the playoffs change networks. If the Dodgers get to the World Series, why can't we get Vinnie instead of Joe Buck and you-know-who. Will he be on the radio?
ReplyDelete59?
ReplyDeleteEither Ken has spent some time hunkered down with Photoshop Elements, or has an aging portrait in his Westwood attic somewhere.
My cousin's bakery makes those cupcakes. I recommend the canoli.

FYI, tb...
ReplyDeleteIf you're in the LA area, KABC will delay the game by around 6-7 seconds to synch with TBS, so you can watch the game and hear Vin calling the shots.
AND you get to hear Ken and Josh do Dodger Talk. Everyone wins.
