No Golden Globes review...

Because a) I never do, b) the Golden Globes are a joke, c) I'm on KABC so couldn't watch them until late, d) 24 premieres, and e) I've never even been nominated. And I once bought these foreign press members lunch!

The only things I'm sorry I'm missing -- Ricky Gervais (who I know will be hilarious) and the red carpet show watching all those stars get out of their limos in the rain.

Just remember -- Pia Zadora won a Golden Globe.

  1. Ditto-without General Larry Platt it's not really an awards show anyway and never is.

  2. Honest question: why are the Golden Globes any more of a joke than all the other award shows?

  3. "And if you don't know who Pia Zadora is, well that's exactly my point."

  4. They're kind of susceptible to payoffs, payola, if I understand right-it's just some dumbass foreign press association that's more like a club no one can get into unless every single board member votes you in or something like that and widely reported to take various forms of payment and goodies in exchange for favorable votes-which are only decided by a few people anyway.

  5. So did Avatar. Proves the point again.

  6. Watched a wonderful documentary about the HFPA a coupla years back. They aren't the show-biz reporters from the major foreign papers I once assumed they were. They tend to be stringers for papers in various Central and East-European papers and websites, etc. How they raise the money to stage the GG's I'll never know, because most of them work at very ordinary jobs to support themselves when they're not playing reporter.

  7. That cinches it-that plus what I wrote equal movie studio shill organization set up for the purpose of rewarding the major players at the Globes they intend to push for Oscars by in essence buying a spot on the Oscar nomination through telling these HFPA members who stay the same year after year and make it impossible to join membership by telling them who and what to vote for. Anybody who might dare vote an independent opinion is booted ASAP but that rarely if ever happens because it's impossible to become a voting member in the first place-ergo, farce.

  8. Hey. I won a Golden Globe and I'm not Pia Zadora... But then the next morning some goon from HFPA came by and took it back. Turns out monopoly money is unacceptable as a bribe.

  9. Okay-the Pia Zadora thing would further cement the movie industry shill thing-from top pop singles 1955-2008 Pia Zadora born Pia Schipani 1954 Hoboken, New Jersey (Hoboken-how interesting)-was a studio exec's girlfriend, correct, therefore her Globe was a done deal the moment her boyfriend decided she would get it and the whole thing is of course a joke as if further proof was really needed. I suppose it really doesn't matter because anybody that understands the reality of the business knows it's not always on the up and up and never has been. The general public neither knows nor understands this and there's no reason to tell them-we all work for the same team and depend on an illusion we are all part of while hopefully attempting to do quality work. For the record, these are Pia Zadora's charted singles: I'm In Love Again #45, 1982 The Clapping Song #36, 1983 When The Rain Begins To Fall (with Jermaine Jackson) #54, 1985 (from her "classic" Voyage Of The Rock Aliens)

  10. I enjoy the Oscars but I couldn't care less about the Globes. They're given out by a very small group of very random, anonymous people, whose only purpose as an organization is to put on this awards show. I don't get it.

(Sure, the Oscars are just an awards show, too. But you've got thousands of people in the voting group and all of them are professionals who somehow "qualified" for the voting. It still means nothing...but it's a far more interesting form of Nothing.)

I had the same reaction as you did. I wanted to watch the show just for Ricky Gervais. I'm going to catch the repeat when it airs on Bravo later this week. I just hope NBC doesn't succumb to temptation and edit out all of the jokes about NBC's prime-time situation and the Jay Leno Scandale.

  13. I love golden globes and Mariah Carey proves that the best to get them is to be born with them.

  14. I'm with tonyskyday...

...but I enjoyed reading Andy Ihnatko and his attempt to justify the Oscars with tortured logic.

[No offense, Andy, and I see your point, but IMO it goes to show how silly all Hollywood awards are.]

Then again, which is sillier, some of the most ego-stroked people in the world throwing themselves huge pats-on-the-back parties and then expecting other people to watch them...

...or the people who watch them?

Which is all a long way of saying: I'm STILL embarrassed that I even know who Pia Zadora is.

  15. @Ralph: If you think you're embarrassed knowingwho Pia Zadora is, imagine how you'd feel if you'd slept with her when she was still Pia Schipani from Hoboken (in my defense, at the time she was my baby sitter and she seduced me)... In the years to come I was to learn that acting was not Pia's only non-talent skill, but at the time...

  16. I was looking forward to Ricky Gervais, really, but when I heard him, it made me more uncomfortable than amused. The lines about how actors are better than the people they portray, how Hugh Laurie is better than a real doctor because he can save people and learn lines etc., just hit too close because it seems to me that too many actors think that they really are better than the people they portray.

With twitter, now you get to see how the actors really think. And it's downright scary.

Unless until it gets taken down
