Okay, hopefully this works. For Halloween weekend I'm trying to show the Bar Wars episode of CHEERS that David Isaacs and I wrote that took place over Halloween. It's
Bar Wars V: The Final Judgment. So assuming this works,

Of all the Bar Wars episodes that we wrote, this is my favorite.
Note: When this show originally aired, the song that the juke box was playing was "Monster Mash" by Bobby Boris Pickett. I guess Paramount didn't want to pay for the rights for syndication so a different song is substituted. And it's not nearly as funny.

ReplyDeleteYou know what I think of Bar Wars. If the episodes were corporeal, I'd take them roughly, like a feral Baldwin. (Probably while sobbing the Lord's Prayer, but that's really more about me.) That's a great pic too. Could have doubled for the episodes where Diane kept turning down his marriage proposals.
ReplyDeleteI like how the scene changes to the next morning after finding Gary "dead" and they are all back at Cheers drinking. (Except Sam of course). Its even confirmed with a "Good morning" greeting and the fact that the funeral is "today at 2". Sam held on as long as he could, but why, or why would everybody go against him and play a joke on him?

ReplyDeleteThis episode actually aired just the other night. On HCHD, I believe. And "Monster Mash" was definitely the song that played on the juke box, as well as the phone, etc. In fact, I remember the timing of Sam hanging up the phone and then picking it back up coinciding rather, um, fortuitously with the "Monster Mash" lyrics. After seeing it with this song instead, I'm only sorry I didn't record the rerun from the other night! In any case, great episode!

ReplyDeleteThis song isn't as funny as using "Monster Mash", bu at least it's kind of identifiable as a Halloween song.
ReplyDeleteAn example of this that I really hated was when Sam and Rebecca were taunting each other by playing "I Fought the Law" at each other on the jukebox and a tape player. It was replaced with another song with no identifiable (to me) lyrics. At that point, the episode made no sense at all.
Wow. I clearly remember Monster Mash playing and watching it with that horrible song playing was incredibly jarring. One weird thing is that it kind of sounds like Ted Danson singing.
ReplyDeletevery enjoyable to watch Ken. It was about halfway through before I realised that this was one of my all time favourite eps - that I haven't seen in about fifteen years. And yet i still remembered exactly how it ended... he he....

where the the opening intro video for CHEERS come from? with all the old-timey pictures that seem to represent the different characters in the show.
ReplyDeleteThe syndication prints still include "Monster Mash" : it was changed for the DVD release of the series as nobody included home video in the original contracts for a lot of tv shows like this. The link you have has been taken from the DVD release of the series.
ReplyDeleteThe Monster Mash version was better (I love how he picks up the phone the second time and it just has time to spit out "Mash" before he quickly hangs it up again), but that other song has grown on me.
ReplyDeleteWhat amazes me about "Cheers" - and this episode is a good example - is how you were able to naturally incorporate so many different characters into 22 minutes. In this episode, even Paul contributes to advancing the story.

I had that episode on tape. My mum had so many episodes recorded during their original airing and I wore those tapes out. So when I saw it on the DVD and it wasn't monster mash I was so pissed off. I hate the music industry.

ReplyDeleteIt was jarring to hear some unknown song; I'd always remembered it as Monster Mash, and yes it WAS much funnier. The stupid song they play sounds a lot more like "Funkytown" than MM did.
