The history of Rock & Roll... in twelve minutes

This is totally great.  Chicago guitar salesman Alex Chadwick strums out 100 R&R riffs in twelve minutes.  The man can pick it!   Hot licks!  Yeow!

  1. Nothing from The Archies? I call foul!

  2. Quite impressive, though I wonder why Pictures of Matchstick Men was stuck in as a '90s cover rather than the Status Quo original...

    1. The 90s cover made it to #1 on the Modern Rock charts; I don't think Status Quo did as well.

  3. Very impressive. Two big omissions. No Beach Boys or Kinks? And considering how old I am there were at least a dozen bands that I had never heard of.

  4. Definitely an intriguing measure of age. After about #70-75, I recognized the artist(s), but not the song. #85 to 100-neither the song title nor the artist(s) meant anything to me. I wonder if it works in the other direction, to indicate youth? Of course, to scholars of rock and pop, age means diddly.

    Very impressive guitar picking, nonetheless!

  5. You are right Blaze, It probably works in reverse. I doubt most 20 year olds know who Buddy Holly or other early rock n rollers are.

  6. Everybody's a critic. I'll just say that that was fucking awesome and that that's how I play guitar when I'm dreaming.

  8. Wow! That was incredible! It makes want to on some classic albums right now. I knew about 80 songs really well, right across the board. The 1980's was my weakest era.

  9. Excellent. And it's spelled "Misirlou."

  10. Ok... well I'd have to say where is something from the Stones in the 70s? Honky Tonk Women. Monkey Man. Seminal stuff. Keith Richard's 5 string stuff.

  11. If you want to test how many of these you actually know, I've created a quiz at Sporcle.com using just the audio portion of the clip. As you play the audio, you can enter the band names or song titles. Correct answers appear on screen.

  12. If anyone's interested, you can listen to a short discussion with Chadwick about this on NPR including why one particular riff was omitted.

  13. Impressive work - midway through and suddenly drop-d tuning, then back up without blinking. Very cool man.
