The amazing Marvin Gaye

Last night I had the great pleasure to go to the Hollywood Bowl and see a tribute to Marvin Gaye. And we were in one of the boxes so the stage was in the same time zone. Just how amazing was Marvin Gaye? Check this out. It's Marvin's vocal track for "Heard it Through the Grapevine" in the clear. The man could sing.

  1. Wow.

Also: I just put in a request for you to be interviewed by the Archive of American Television. Folk. I really hope they agree with me that you'd make a valuable addition to their archives!

  2. That was something else!

Ken, I've been reading you since you were in the American Idol audience (not why I found you!). I was looking forward to your "cranky post" earlier this week, and you delivered. Thank you for providing me with content every day. I've enjoyed your books and always look forward to seeing what you have up next.

  3. There's something similar on the DVD accompanying the Traveling Wilburys' box set. In all of Roy Orbison's singing for the group, his vocals are put through a slight echo effect. On the DVD they have video of him singing unprocessed, and it is amazing to hear.

  5. Marvin Gaye has always been my favorite singer. I would say I'd love to see a biopic of his fascinating life and tragic ending, but biopics are so often disappointing. I really enjoyed Get On Up and Ray, but otherwise, most are pretty bad.

  7. Really enjoy your blog. I am always telling people about people/events you write about. Intrigued about the Hollywood Bowl--have to see it someday.
Love to see/hear more performances, such as Marvin Gaye (amazing). Also, big baseball fan, so love your blogs about baseball.
