I watched the movie of THE ODD COUPLE recently starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. A lot of it still holds up, but when I first saw it as a kid I was hysterical. I couldn’t imagine any better casting than Matthau & Lemmon.
Seeing it again, after many many years, one thing struck me – I now greatly prefer Jack Klugman and Tony Randall as Oscar and Felix. Sure, part of it is familiarity, but Randall really WAS Felix Unger. Jack Lemmon was a gifted comic actor who played the part very well. And Klugman’s Oscar was the equal to Matthau’s, plus he played better off of Randall as Felix. To me. You may prefer Matthau & Lemmon. Or you may have seen the original Broadway production with Matthau and Art Carney and to you that’s the real Odd Couple.
Or even Morris Fishbine and Larry Crellman, who played them in a local community theatre in your town and to you those are the guys.
Probably the only thing that everyone can agree on is that when there was a revival on Broadway a few years ago and Nathan Lane played Oscar that was absurd.
But for most of us, it’s who you grew up with. Same with James Bonds. It used to be that there was no contest. Sean Connery was James Bond. But to younger generations Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and most recently, Daniel Craig is THE real 007. If you went through the '60s completely drugged out you might think David Niven was the penultimate James Bond. But you would be wrong (you'd probably be dead).
Same with Superman. To baby boomers there’s only one: George Reeves, even though he had a gut and thinning hairline. For most of you however, I imagine Christopher Reeve is the one and only Man of Steel. If your favorite is Brandon Routh seek help.
When my partner and I took our first meeting at MASH, producer Gene Reynolds loaded us down with research and invited us to come back with stories. (We sold one and that was the beginning of our four-year association with MASH). But amongst the reading material was the novel of MASH. The 1969 movie starring Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould was very faithful to the book. So reading it was very strange. I kept trying to picture Alan Alda and Wayne Rogers in the roles performing the scenes, but in my head was the movie. And the character of Hawkeye is quite different in the Sutherland vs. Alda version. It was very schitzo. Ultimately, I preferred Alan's Hawkeye, but I have to be honest -- it took about a season of the TV show to change my allegiance.
So now, as a friendly blog survey, let me ask you, dear reader and pop culture maven..
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
James Bond?
Superman?
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
Lois Lane?
Sherlock Holmes?
Dr. Who?
Darrin Stephens?
Hawkeye?
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Thanks in advance for playing the game. I look forward to your feedback.
Q: Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteA: Walter and Jack
James Bond?
A: Connery. Runner up is Bronson. I like my Bonds with a bit of cheese thrown in. If every Craig version was like the last movie, I might have been putting him as my favorite.
Q: Superman?
A: Reeves.
Q: Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
A: You didn't specify animated or live action, etc, so I am going with Kevin Conroy from Batman: TAS
Q: Lois Lane?
A: Kidder
Q: Sherlock Holmes?
A: Benedict from SHERLOCK
Q: Dr. Who?
A: Tennant all the way.
Q: Darrin Stephens?
A: York.
Q: Hawkeye?
A: Alda.
Q: Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
A: Hrm. I like both Carrey and Bob.
Klugman & Randall
ReplyDeleteSean Connery
Christopher Reeve
Christian Bale
Dana Delaney (animated voiceover, but she nailed the character)
Basil Rathbone
Tom Baker
Dick Sargent
Alan Alda
Bob Barker
Dear Ken,
ReplyDeleteHappy Rosh Hashanah.
I wish you and your family a very happy healthy holiday, and a joyous year to come.
L'shanah tovah.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. Randall and Klugman. They just did it right. Plus, to be fair, they had the time to get it right. They did, what? 120 episodes together. They makes it easier to get the chemistry right.
James Bond?
I loved Connery, and have an affection for Moore, but man Daniel Craig hits it out of the park. It doesn't hurt that the producers realized in a world of The Dark Knight and Jason Bourne, they would have to step up their game in terms of scripts.
Superman?
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Christian Bale. He may be a jerk, but they gave him something to play and he got the job done. But, I must admit when I was 5 it was Adam West. A few decades later, I can appreciate the job he did and considering that ate his career, he gets honorable mention.
Lois Lane? Margo Kidder. She was attractive, but not stunning. She was actually nice to Clark. The torture wasn't that she loved Superman but had disdain for Clark. The torture was that Clark was in the "friendzone" thus he got to hang around someone he loved but only LIKED him.
Sherlock Holmes?
Jeremy Brett. Others may say Benedict Cumbersalad or Basil Rathbone. They might mention them, but they'd be wrong. Just so wrong.
Dr. Who?
Peter Davison is my doctor. Saw him on PBS more than 30 years ago when I was just a pup.
Darrin Stephens?
The older I got, the more I sided with Endora. Her daughter decided to marry this schmuck? But if I had to pick, I guess I'd go with Dick York over Dick Sargent. (I am avoiding so many bad jokes right now).
Hawkeye?
Alan Alada. Donald Sutherland, God bless him, always gave me the creeps as Hawkeye.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Since I haven't seen an episode of that show for 45 years, I've got to go with Bob Barker.
As a Brit I don't know who a lot of those characters are but...
ReplyDeleteSuperman - Christopher Reeve
Lois - Margot Kidder
James Bond - can't stand any of them really...
Batman - Michael Keaton (yes, really)
Dr. Who - Tom Baker
Sherlock Holmes - the peerless Jeremy Brett.
Can't believe I left Superman out. It's Chris Reeve. First off, he convinced me Clark and Supes were two different people. He nailed the comedy, and when the circumstances required it, he really got the pathos and lonliness that came with being Superman. Plus, I could never imagine him being a deadbeat dad and creepy stalker. And when he fought Zod, he took the fight out of a crowded city, thus saving hundreds of thousands of lives.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI also recently re-watched THE ODD COUPLE. What bothered me is how my mid-30s self has become more like Felix Unger than my teenage Oscar self could have ever believed.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't answer all of your questions, as I'm not familiar enough with some of the shows to really have an opinion.
James Bond? SEAN CONNERY
Superman? CHRISTOPHER REEVES
Batman? I've never loved Batman enough to have a favourite. But right now, feeling sick to death of "gritty" superhero movies, it's ADAM WEST.
Lois Lane? MARGO KIDDER
Sherlock Holmes? JEREMY BRETT (no brainer)
Hawkeye? Too tough to call. Both feel so different, and yet great, in their own ways.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? BRUCE FORSYTH (I'm British)
Felix and Oscar
ReplyDelete- Klugman and Randall
James Bond?
- Daniel Craig (would be Pierce Brosnan if the movies he was in were not so stupid)
Superman?
- Christopher Reeve
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
- yes, Michael Keaton
Lois Lane?
- Amy Adams (only because I'm in love with her)
Sherlock Holmes?
- Basil Rathbone, but Jeremy Brett and Benedict Cumberbatch are also great (do you remember when Roger Moore played the great detective)
Dr. Who?
- Who?
Darrin Stephens?
- the first one
Hawkeye?
- Alan Alda
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
- Bob Barker, but I've never seen the new guy
PS - The supporting cast in THE ODD COUPLE just blew me away. They oozed their characters with a mere glance at each other. I presume they were taken from the Broadway production?
ReplyDeleteWho is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Sean Connery
Superman? Christopher Reeve is the gold standard for ALL superhero movies.
Batman? Christian Bale, but I have a soft spot for Adam West.
Lois Lane? Margot Kidder, but I had to grit my teeth as I typed that.
Sherlock Holmes? Benedict Cumberbach
Dr. Who? David Tennant
Darrin Stephens? Dick York
Hawkeye? Donald Sutherland
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bob Barker
Holmes, Jeremy Brett (though I just started watching Sherlock and I do rather like the new guy)
ReplyDeleteSuperman, Reeve
Lois Lane.. Teri Hatcher :)
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar? Gotta be Randall and Klugman. (Really having a hard time picturing Art Carney as Felix)
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Connery.
Superman? George Reeves.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)Keaton's ok, Adam West, campy.
Lois Lane? Noelle Neil over Phyllis Coates.
Sherlock Holmes? Rathbone.
Dr. Who? Never saw it.
Darrin Stephens? York.
Hawkeye? Alda.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Both are fine.
Question regarding MASH: Was not using the Duke character from the book and movie a budgetary decision.
Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteRandall & Klugman.
James Bond?
Roger Moore.
Superman?
George Reeves.
Batman?
Adam West.
Lois Lane?
Noel Neill.
Sherlock Holmes?
none
Dr. Who?
David Tennant.
Darrin Stephens?
Dick York.
Hawkeye?
Alan Alda.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Dennis James! Tom Kennedy!
Just kidding. Of course it's Bob Barker.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar? Demond Wilson and Ron Glass
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Connery. Sean Connery.
Superman? Christopher Reeve (and cut Routh some slack, please. The flaws weren't with him.)
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Kevin Conroy
Lois Lane? The first season Lois with Reeves.
Sherlock Holmes? Cumberbatch.
Dr. Who? Matt Smith...so far. By the way, it's DOCTOR Who.
Darrin Stephens? Poor guy with the bad back. The guy who was straight but couldn't stand straight.
Hawkeye? Alan Alda.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bob "spade and neuter" Barker.
The only one of those I have strong feelings about is Sherlock Holmes. I am well aware that Jeremy Brett looked and acted far closer to the one in the books, who is the true original, but for me Sherlock always has been and always will be...
ReplyDelete...BASIL RATHBONE.
And yes, it's who you saw first/grew up with.
wg
Felix & Oscar? - Never saw the film so have to go with the Klugman and Randall version
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Roger Moore.
Superman? Christopher Reeve, full stop.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
Adam West
Lois Lane? Wossname who played her on the TV Show Lois and Clark
Sherlock Holmes? Benedict Cumberbatch.
Dr. Who? Love every one of his incarnations. Peter Capaldi is knocking it out of the park this series, though. He's amazing.
Darrin Stephens? The first one. The second one was far more grouchy. Never understood why Sam put up with him. Total Team Endora, me.
Hawkeye? Alan Alda
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bob Barker, I guess, because I never watch the new one.
Also I liked Diane better than Rebecca
One more for folks to chew on.
ReplyDeleteJoker: Romero or Nicholson?
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteRandall and Klugman. Another Broadway misfire was a distaff remake (no problem there) with Sally Struthers as the Felix and Rita Moreno as the Oscar. Fine actors, but they were wrong for the roles.
James Bond? - I'm partial to Connery, but Daniel Craig is closest to the book Bond, so I am told.
Superman? - Christopher Reeve, but I wish he had better scripts!
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
I agree with Nick Nitro; Kevin Conroy was good, but I'll go with Christian Bale. The 1940's serial Batman had our hero driving around in a...car. Big points for that!
Lois Lane? - Margot Kidder.
Sherlock Holmes? - Clive Merrison from the BBC radio series.
Dr. Who? - David Tennant
Darrin Stephens? - Dick York
Hawkeye? - Alan Alda (to be fair, he had a LOOONG time to learn to be Pierce, not to denigrate the talent of Alda)
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? - Bill Cullen. Barker is great, but I like Cullen's wit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2doj6jJhnX0
For a long time, I thought Klugman and Randle would come back for a TV series on Grumpy Old Men>
ReplyDeleteBond Roger Moore
Odd Couple Klugman and Randall
Batman Adam West
Riddler Frank Gorshin
Superman Reeve
Mash Alda and Farell
Price Is Right Barker, but Carey great replacement.
James Bond?
ReplyDeleteSean Connery, even though I grew during Roger Moore's tenure.
Superman?
Christopher Reeve
Batman?
Christian Bale. Although, honorable mention should go to Adam West.
Hawkeye?
Alan Alda.
For the others, I just don't care.
Q: Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteA: Tony Randall and Jack Klugman
James Bond?
A: Sean Connery.
Q: Superman?
A: Christopher Reeve.
Q: Batman?
A: Christian Bale
Q: Lois Lane?
A: Erica Durance.
Q: Sherlock Holmes?
A: Robert Downey Jr.
Q: Dr. Who?
A: ? - Never watched it
Q: Darrin Stephens?
A: Dick York.
Q: Hawkeye?
A: Alda (but never saw the movie).
Q: Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
A: Bob Barker.
Darren Stephens Dick York
ReplyDeleteCatwoman Julie Newmar (she was played by 3 women on the TV series)
Any rock and rollers? Favorite AC/DC lead singer? Ok, Maybe that's too far off topic.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar? Klugman & Randall
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Woody Allen
Superman? Christopher Reeve
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Yes, really. I was wiling to buy that a nerdish traumatized billionaire would dress up as a bat to fight crime when keaton was selling. Also, Adam West. Bale -- makes me snooze. Voice over -- Kevin Conroy, although I think Diedrich Bader has done nicely, too.
Lois Lane? Teri Hatcher, mostly because I just love Teri Hatcher, although I did very much like Dana Delaney's voice work and she would have been the ideal Lois Lane in live action. Dana Delaney would not let some big idiot swoop in and save her all of the time.
Sherlock Holmes? Hugh Laurie.
Dr. Who? Me. (Future version.)
Darrin Stephens? York.
Hawkeye? Alda.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bill Cullen.
Can I add Demond Wilson & Ron Glass to the great Oscar/Felix combinations?
ReplyDeleteWho is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteTony Randall and Jack Klugman. But I will give Thomas Lennon and Matthew Perry a chance.
James Bond?
"George Lazenby!" (I keed.) Sean Connery.
Superman?
Christopher Reeve. And I'm a baby boomer (albeit among the youngest in that group).
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
Adam West. Never really saw the movies.
Lois Lane?
Margot Kidder.
Sherlock Holmes?
Robert Downey Jr. I haven't seen the Basil Rathbone or Benedict Cumberbatch versions.
Dr. Who?
Tom Baker.
Darrin Stephens?
Dick Sargent. (When I watched it in reruns, the later episodes were run first, then the black-and-white York ones, so York was the first Darrin, but the second one I saw.)
Hawkeye?
Alan Alda.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
I'm going to go off the board and say Dennis James (who hosted the syndicated early evening version from 1972-1976; Bob Barker was still hosting the syndicated Truth or Consequences at the time). I rarely saw the daytime version growing up because I was in school; when I did I found Barker very condescending (and apparently he wasn't much fun offstage either), but I watched the Dennis James episodes faithfully on Saturday nights.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteMatthau and Lemmon, but very, very close call.
James Bond?
Connery
Superman?
Christopher Reeve
Batman?
Christian Bale.
Lois Lane?
Margo Kidder.
Sherlock Holmes?
Though Basil owned it forever until Jeremy Brett. Wow.
Dr. Who?
No opinion.
Darrin Stephens?
Dick York
Hawkeye?
Alan Alada (in the early years)
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
No opinion.
Keaton was great as Batman, Ken. And if you don't like Routh as Superman, fine, but the one I thought laid an egg in that movie was Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. I know he's an awesome actor, but he just didn't have it in this one.
ReplyDeleteOdd Couple: No wrong answer. But I'll take Matthau and Lemmon.
ReplyDeleteJames Bond: Connery. Obviously.
Superman: The cartoon.
Lois Lane: Noel Neill
Holmes: Basil Rathbone.
Dr. Who?: Who?
Darrin Stephens: Dick York. Of course.
Hawkeye: Sutherland. Alda became a caricature of himself after about five seasons.
Price Is Right: Barker. (Wasn't aware anyone else did that job.)
Batman: Stephen Amell on CW's "Arrow"
ReplyDeleteAnd why isn't anybody mentioning Dean Cain as Superman?
Hmmm. Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, either Connery or Brosnan for Bond. I like the bit of humor they brang to the role.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time I don't really have favorites. So often a new actor can breathe new life into a role by adding his own twist, and as long as they don't completely reinvent it, I'm good. And it's funny that you should have written on this topic today because I was just discussing the various portrayals of Agatha Christie characters with someone this morning. For the record, David Suchet IS Poirot, and nobody else will ever be able to play that part.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar? Randall and Klugman
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Daniel Craig, but it may be that the writing is just better
Superman? Tom Welling, I think the Smallville TV show was better than any of the movies
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Christian Bale
Lois Lane? Teri Hatcher, they are real and spectacular
Sherlock Holmes? Cumberbunch
Dr. Who? Tom BAker
Darrin Stephens? Dick
Hawkeye? Alan Alda
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bob Barker
Benson, the best Joker was Heath Ledger
Klugman/Randall
ReplyDeleteChristopher Reeve
Adam West
Teri Hatcher
Benedict Cumberbatch
Dr. Who? - exactly
Dick York
Alan Alda
Bob Barker
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen either iteration - sorry!
James Bond?
I'm in a minority here - Timothy Dalton. He was ahead of his time in doing a gritty and more serious Bond.
Superman?
No contest - Christopher Reeve.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
Absolutely Michael Keaton. His Batman was menacing and silent, not someone who keeps shouting incoherently. He also came up with the idea first of putting on a different voice as Batman to underscore the theme of duality, but his Batman voice was quiet and gravelly, not a ridiculous roar.
Lois Lane?
Margot Kidder. I like Kate Bosworth but she was woefully miscast.
Sherlock Holmes?
British actor Jeremy Brett, sadly no longer with us, was perfect.
Dr. Who?
Sylvester McCoy - he never got the respect he deserved for his wonderfully quirky Doctor, and it didn't help that his version was at a low point for the show in terms of crumby production values and poor ratings.
Darrin Stephens?
Dick Sargent, but only because his were the only episodes I happened to see.
Hawkeye?
Jeremy Renner (that's one for Marvel fans)
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Never watched.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteTony Randall & Jack Klugman
James Bond?
Daniel Craig
Superman?
George Reeves
Batman?
Adam West
Lois Lane?
Noel Neill
Sherlock Holmes?
Basil Rathbone
Dr. Who?
Never seen it.
Darrin Stephens?
Dick York
Hawkeye?
Alan Alda
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Bill Cullen
This may be my first comment; I forget. But let me just say that I really enjoy the blog.
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Probably Connery. As a kid, I liked the then-current Roger Moore, but I don't think his stuff aged well.
Superman? Tim Daly. He nails the cartoon Superman. If it's a live actor, though, Christopher Reeve.
Batman? Again I go with the voice; Kevin Conroy. I honestly don't have a strong preference with the screen guys.
Lois Lane? Teri Hatcher. I went there!
Sherlock Holmes? Probably Jeremy Brett overall. I've been enjoying Benedict Cumberbatch's take, but it's not the traditional Holmes, so I don't really see him as definitive.
Dr. Who? Tom Baker, hands down. Again, the "guy I grew up watching" factor. I liked David Tennant a lot, though. I'd give him second place.
Darrin Stephens? Dick York. No contest.
Hawkeye? Alan Alda by default. I've never seen the movie.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bob Barker really defined the show. How could I pick anyone else?
Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteTony Randall and Jack Klugman
James Bond?
Connery. Sean Connery.
Superman?
George Reeves
Batman?
Christian Bale
Lois Lane?
Noel Neill
Sherlock Holmes?
Basil Rathbone
Dr. Who?
Rowan Atkinson
Darrin Stephens?
Dick York
Hawkeye?
Donald Sutherland
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Bill Cullen!
1. I never watched any version of The Odd Couple, so couldn't say.
ReplyDelete2. Connery. A close second is (deep breath) Pierce Brosnan.
3. Christopher Reeve.
4. Um...the animated one.
5. I don't have a favorite Lois Lane.
6. Jeremy Brett; he made me fall in love with Holmes in a way that no other actor has been able to do (sorry, Cumberbatch fans).
7. Which Doctor happens to my favorite...hmm. I love them all; I can't choose!
8. I've never heard of Darrin Stephens.
9. I don't have a favorite Hawkeye since I don't have earlier material with which to compare Jeremy Renner's performance.
10. I've never even seen THE PRICE IS RIGHT.
1. I have yet to see any version of Felix and Oscar.
ReplyDelete2. Connery, runner up Brosnan.
3. Christopher Reeve.
4. Kevin Conroy, animated series.
5. No favorites re Lois Lane.
6. Jeremy Brett; he made me fall in love with Holmes in a way no other actor has been able to do (sorry, Cumberbuns).
7. I love all the Doctors and you insist I choose one?
8. Never heard of him.
9. No favorites here.
10. Have yet to watch it.
@McAlvie: Have you ever seen Tony Randall's take on Poirot in the 1965 movie THE ALPHABET MURDERS? If that didn't take the prize for miscasting, it ought to at least be in the top ten. That director Frank Tashlin seemed to think he was making a cartoon didn't help.
ReplyDeletezadig
ReplyDeleteAnd why isn't anybody mentioning Dean Cain as Superman?
You have to ask?
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar? no opinion. I know you'll have a hear attack at this, but I've never seen any version of THE ODD COUPLE.
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Daniel Craig. Somebody said it before--Pierce Brosnan might have been made for the part, but except for GOLDENEYE and TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS he had pretty weak movies. Daniel Craig, however, has had really strong films. SKYFALL was just amazing.
Superman? Christopher Reeve.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Yep.
Lois Lane? Teri Hatcher. Ha ha. No, really--Margot Kidder.
Sherlock Holmes? Jeremy Brett
Dr. Who? Tom Baker.
Darrin Stephens? No opinion.
Hawkeye? No opinion.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bob Barker.
Randall and Klugman were great. My fantasy cast for a remake would've been Phil Hartman and Chris Farley. Hawkeye Pierce from the movie was a different character from the show. I liked both.
ReplyDeleteBeing fairly young, I haven't got opinions on all of these, so I'll just answer the applicable ones.
ReplyDeleteSuperman? Dean Cain. That was my favourite show as a four year old, and I will never let it go.
Lois Lane? Teri Hatcher, for the same reason.
Sherlock Holmes? Benedict Cumberbatch, though I don't feel overly qualified to comment, haven't not seen many others.
Dr. Who? David Tennant (with Eccleston a close second, and Capaldi creeping up on the outside)
Hawkeye? Alan Alda, all the way. The book and the movie crossed the line for me from funny to cruel on more than one occasion.
Question for Johnny Walker: Conspicuously absent is your choice of the Doctor. I know its a mostly a recent obsession here in the states, but what's the current buzz in England? (And I have to say, because I always enjoy your comments and questions, that for some reason I read your posts in the voice of David Mitchell. Sorry.)
ReplyDeleteA little respect, please: Morris Fishbine killed.
ReplyDeleteFelix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteKlugman & Randall
James Bond?
Brosnan, followed by Moore and Connery. Craig is slowly getting better, but his movies started out too brutal and dark for my tastes. I liked Niven very much too. ;)
Superman?
Christopher Reeve. Henry Cavill does a promising job, though.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
Keaton, all the way, followed by West. Bale was pretty good (although Wayne and Batman were pretty much the same guy), certainly way better than Kilmer or Clooney. Affleck? We'll see.
Lois Lane?
Amy Adams
Sherlock Holmes?
Basil Rathbone, especially in the radio show. Jeremy Brett is very good as well. I haven't seen enough Cumberbatch to warm to him in the role, and Downey is playing a character written by someone who merely read Conan Doyle's Tables of Contents. ;)
Doctor Who?
Tom Baker, with Davison and Tennant not that far behind.
Darrin Stephens?
Been a long time since I saw Bewitched.
Hawkeye?
Alda
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
I've never seen Carrey there, so must be Bob Barker.
Sorry.)
ReplyDeleteI think to give it context, I'm 45 years old:
ReplyDeleteJames Bond: Sean Connery
Superman: Christopher Reeves
Batman: I'd have to go with Kevin Conroy here from the Animated Series.
Lois Lane: Dana Delaney from the animated series, who I still think would have done a bang up job had they used her in a live action version
Sherlock Holmes: Benedict Cumberbatch has won me over
Dr. Who: David Tennant, although to be fair, I never watched the previous versions because the theme song scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and I never watched the show.
Darrin Stephens: I don't know why, but when I was a kid I always felt Dick Sargent was about to hit his wife, so I'll go with Dick York on this one.
Hawkeye: Alda. I never warmed to the MASH film. I can objectively see why it was good, but it never connected with me the way the show did.
Price is Right: I love Drew Carey, but Bob Barker is a hard act to follow.
And here's something to while away a day ... imagining some cross casting. How would a Matthau-Randall Odd Couple (or a Klugman-Lemmon) one have done? Those can be nice thoughts as you drift off to sleep...
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I forgot the Black Odd Couple with Demond Wilson and Ron Glass. It was only on for a partial season if I remember correctly but I thought it was damn funny!
ReplyDeleteJack Klugman & Tony Randall
ReplyDeleteGeorge Reeves
Adam West
Noel Neill
Dick York
Alan Alda
Bob Barker
Jerry Mathers
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteTony Randall was almost too fussy for my taste. Gotta go with Jack & Walter
James Bond? Pierce Brosnon, but then, I just love Pierce Brosnon
Superman? Christopher Reeve, all the way.. still makes my heart skip a beat
Batman? all for fun, Adam West
Lois Lane? Kidder was a bit strident, I'm going with Terri Hatcher
Sherlock Holmes? not to trad, but I love the Cumberbatch Sherlock (I like Johnny Miller, if only he'd stop whispering!)
Doctor Who? Love Tennant and Smith... I just don't think I can choose between them
Darrin Stephens? York
Hawkeye? Alan Alda. His Hawkeye was a guy you'd like to have in your life. Sutherland's Hawkeye was a guy you wanted out of your house
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Barker
Off topic: http://www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t342
ReplyDeletethe Albuquerque Isotopes have moved from the Dodgers to the Rockies affiliation. LOTS of changes: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140917&content_id=95113940&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteMaybe Lemmon & Matthau, but Randall & Klugman are probably equals.
James Bond?
All of them? Each put their own spin on the character. Brosnan had the worst movies to work with, but he was made to be Bond. Connery and Craig get closest to Fleming's portrayal of Bond. Moore was just fun. Lazenby was good at playing Bond in a Bond movie that wouldn't have worked with Connery or Moore.
Superman?
Chris Reeve, hands down. I consider SUPERMAN ('78) to be my favorite movie of all time. It's the ultimate popcorn movie. When you go to the theater and the lights dim, that's the kind of movie you (usually) hope to see.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
I'd probably say Keaton. The Burton films are entertaining and interesting for the attention paid to the art design. Nolan's films took themselves way too seriously. For that matter, I'd put Adam West second because his Batman was more fun.
Lois Lane?
Margot Kidder or Teri Hatcher. Noel Neill pretty much originated it, but these gals had spunk.
Sherlock Holmes?
Jeremy Brett, but the best score from a Sherlock movie or TV show was Miklos Rozsa's score from THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES by Billy Wilder.
Dr. Who?
Tom Baker.
Darrin Stephens?
York.
Hawkeye?
Sutherland. It was around a time when he was in a bunch of great war movies, but his turn as Hawkeye was more sophisticated than those previous roles. I could never really relate to Alda on that level, really.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Drew Carey. Sure, I grew up with Bob Barker hosting, but after the whole sex scandal, I didn't really have the same admiration for him. Carey seemed to take a while to warm up to the position, but I think he interacts more on an every-man level than Barker ever did. Barker was just from a different era, whereas Carey is just doing his own thing the best way he knows how.
Q: Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteTough choice: Matthau and Lemmon were so good but I gotta go with Klugman and Randall
James Bond?
A: I would say Pierce Brosnan if he had better scripts. My first Bond was Roger Moore who I actually preferred to Sean Connery when I was a kid but what did I know? Now it's Connery for the win!
Q: Superman?
A: I wish Christopher Reeves had better scripts but I'm still going with Reeves as my pick. How he could transition from Superman to Clark and back again...damn!
Q: Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Of the people who have played Batman in the movies, yeah, I'd pick Keaton. (Kevin Conroy in the animated series trumps everybody!)
Q: Lois Lane?
A: Teri Hatcher (drool!)
Q: Sherlock Holmes?
A: Benedict Cumberbatch
Q: Dr. Who? (that's DOCTOR Who!)
A: My first Doctor was Tom Baker and remained for the longest time my favorite although I'm fond of Jon Pertwee and Sylvester McCoy. David Tennant was so awesome in the revived series and so was Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi is currently killing it and...DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE!!!
Q: Darrin Stephens?
A: Dick York (the first one, right?) His Darrin was put upon by all the magic shenanigans but you could tell he still loved Samantha. The 2nd Darrin often acted like he was on the verge of asking for a divorce.
Q: Hawkeye?
A: Alan Alda.
Q: Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
A: Drew Carey has really found his groove as the host and so gets my vote of confidence.

THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD HAVE MADE A FIST FIGHT WITH ADAM SANDLER FUNNY (AND IT'S NOT DREW CAREY)
I cut out the ones for which I have no opinion (shows and movies I haven't seen).
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? I liked Brosnan, but I didn't like the movies he was in. It's between him and Craig for me.
Superman? Tim Daly (Superman: The Animated Series). This show was better than any live action version has ever been.
Batman? Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series). This show was better than any live action version has ever been. Though as an aside, my favorite Joker is actually John DiMaggio from Batman: Under the Red Hood, rather than Mark Hamill from this series.
Lois Lane? Dana Delany (again, cartoon)
Darrin Stephens? Dick York, by a million miles. Sargent always seemed angry and spiteful, and even when he smiled it felt put on. Almost like he resented his wife for being a witch, while York was merely stressed by it and loved her anyway.
Hawkeye? Tough one. They were written so differently that neither could really take the other's place. I suppose if I had to choose, I'd go with Alda. But he needed to whistle more.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bob Barker. Drew Carey is at his best when he's doing comedy, and he always seems a bit out of his element on this show.
Tom Baker is the only Dr. Who I was ever able to get into. Really liked his assistant too.
ReplyDeleteDonald Sutherland going away. Alan Alda's Hawkeye was fingernails on a chalkboard, especially in the later years.

Only depiction to get Lois Lane right was the Fleisher (sp?) cartoon series from the 40s.
Jeremy Brett. Cumberbatch is great, but this truly is a reimagining, not just an updating.
Tom Baker, unlikely beating Tennant by a nose.
Dick York. Please.

Sherlock- Basil Rathbone

Darrin Stephens- York
Hawkeye- Alan Alda
Price is Right?- Bob Barker (proudly representing my hometown of Springfield, Mo. and alma mater in Drury University)
Felix & Oscar? Randall and Matthau, if that's kosher.
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Connery, but Brosnan might've been my choice if all his films were as good as Goldeneye
Superman? Christopher Reeve (nobody old enough to pick Bud Collyer?)
Batman? Sure, Michael Keaton, even if Batman did get a little lost sometimes amid the preponderance of super-villains.
Lois Lane? Margot Kidder
Sherlock Holmes? Jeremy Brett, in a walk.
Doctor Who? Matt Smith, qualified by my lack of exposure to most of the others.
Darrin Stephens? Dick York. I always loved Dick York. For five years, he played a perpetually stressed guy while battling a debilitating back injury.
Hawkeye? Alda.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? I've seen Carey only in clips, but I'm inclined to pick him because I like him.
Randall and Klugman for sure. After the series was cancelled they toured together and did the play. I saw it in Hamilton and it was awesome...

Felix & Oscar? Randall & Klugman (I did see a stage show with Jamie Farr & William Christopher once.)

Batman? Adam West ALWAYS!
Lois Lane? Gotta go with Margo

Dr. Who? Tom Baker
Darrin Stephens? York
Hawkeye? Alda (Never been big on the Altman film!)
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Barker
For Sherlock Holmes I guess I'll go with Basil Rathbone but there's also a failed pilot that's stuck with me for years. "The Return Of The World's Greatest Detective" was about an L.A. motorcycle cop who was an avid reader of the Holmes stories. One day, his motorcycle falls over konking him on the head while he's reading. YOU GUESSED IT; he thinks he's Sherlock Holmes in 1970's L.A. The star was Larry Hagman and it was probably a good thing this pilot failed because of what he moved on to the next year.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteIn the end, I really love Tony and Jack
James Bond?
Goldfinger is still, by far, the best movie and Sean Connery is the star... However I thought For Your Eyes Only and Roger Moore starred as Bond in that... I'm know I'm one of the few people who liked Timothy Dalton, but I thought he played the character well. I thought Bronson did a nice job. I thought Casino Royale (actually both of them) were good entertainment. But Daniel Craig was only good in that one -- the other movies he was in were no better than the original Casino Royale -- the stories made as much sense but Burt Bacharach's score was better.
Superman?
I grew up with George Reeves, but I have to admit I loved Christopher Reeve.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
Grew up with Adam West. He was fun. Christian Bale actually did a pretty good job.
Lois Lane?
Margot Kidder.
Sherlock Holmes?
I've liked many Sherlock Holmes. He's been played by dozens of acgtors... I loved Rathbone, Christopher Plummer, Nicole Williamson, Michael Caine, Robert Stephens, George C Scott, and Benedict Cumberbach. I might like Jonny Lee Miller if I could understand him -- I can't seem to turn the volume up high enough to make sense of anything he says. As far as the Jeremy Brett fans -- I look forward to seeing him, but as yet, have not.

Pierce Brosnan, but I wouldn't throw Daniel Craig out of a speeding Austin Martin either. That scene in Casino Royale where he steps into the shower, fully clothed to comfort Vesper just gets to me.
Superman? George Reeves was my childhood Superman but loved Christopher Reeve in the roll.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) I grew up on campy Batman tv, so Adam West. Pow! Bam! Holy Cheese, Batman.
Lois Lane? Kidder because she had more to do.
Sherlock Holmes? Basil Rathbone

ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Roger Moore. I thought he treated the material with the seriousness it deserved, although he did hang on a little to long.
Superman? Christopher Reeve. He looked the part, and made Superman and Clark seemed like two different people, even though I knew they weren’t. It also helped that this was before they started dicking with the costume.
Batman? Kevin Conroy. Don’t know if he could have done a live-action version.
Lois Lane? Dana Delaney. In real life, she even looks like Lois.
Sherlock Holmes? Rathbone, although I haven’t seen enough of later versions to give an informed opinion. Honorable mention to George C. Scott in They Might Be Giants.
Dr. Who? No opinion.

Felix & Oscar: Haven't seen the movie, sort of saw episodes of the TV show as a kid so I'll give it to Randall & Klugman.
ReplyDeleteJames Bond: Connery with a damn close tie between Brosnan and Craig
Superman: No preference, honestly. Although Grant Morrison wrote him pretty well in All-Star Superman.
Batman: Kevin Conroy from the animated series in the 90s.
Lois Lane: Dana Delaney in the cartoon.
Sherlock Holmes: Jeremy Brett (Classic), Jonny Lee Miller (Contemporary) with Brett winning overall.
Doctor Who: Sylvester McCoy, dammit! Tennant just after.
Darrin Stephens: Never liked Bewitched.
Hawkeye: I love the book more then the TV show but I know Alda in the role more than Sutherland so... Alda by a hair.
Price is Right: Barker. Although when I told my girlfriend about an interview with Carey talking about hosting the gig, she stopped me: "Wait, when did Drew start hosting?" Which kinda sums up the importance of it in our lives.
@Al...I'm seeing no love for Sally Struthers and Rita Moreno either.
ReplyDeleteRoger Owen Green (and Ken): I know logistically it'd be a pain in the ass, but how about going old school and bring back the Montreal Royals?

I have no opinion on any of the comic book stuff, since I don't watch comic book movies. But I will say Adam West for Batman. And I've never seen Dr. Who.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise: Randall & Klugman, Connery (although I think Timothy Dalton was underrated), Basil Rathbone, Dick York, Alan Alda, and although I grew up with Bob Barker, Drew Carey for "Price is Right."
Incidentally, Antenna TV recently ran a 50th anniversary "Bewitched" marathon. I hadn't seen that show in years. I remember thinking Darren was an overbearing jackass and couldn't imagine what Samantha saw in him, but I had forgotten just awful he was. Dick York was a good enough comic actor to make him halfway likable, but Dick Sargent played him as just a hostile prick. It's no wonder Samantha's family hated him. Every time one of them dropped in, the first words out of his mouth were insults, which was not only nasty but stupid, considering how much more powerful they were than he. I saw one where he insulted Cousin Serena, and even after she explained that she'd come to bury the hatchet and brought him a gift, he still kept snarling and insulting her. She didn't have to turn him into a pig; God and the writers had already done that.

ReplyDeleteWho is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
Randall and Klugman for the same reasons as you
James Bond?
I admit to enjoying the campy Roger Moore Bonds, probably because it's what I grew up with.
Superman?
Christopher Reeve if I have to pick, but I'm not sure I've seen any actor really nail that character yet.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
I can't decide on this one, but I defend the Keaton choice by remembering what someone said at the time (and I paraphrase): "Well, THAT's a guy I can see putting on a bat suit to get respect."
Lois Lane?
Noel Neill. She just looks to much like the cartoon character to choose anyone else.
Sherlock Holmes?
Cumberbatch. No contest.
Dr. Who?
The long scarf guy (you can see I'm an avid watcher).
Darrin Stephens?
Dick York. First, I loved his manic temperament. Second, E.M and D.S. had about as much chemistry as EM and a pencil.
Hawkeye?
Alda, but really, they don't even seem like the same character to me.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Drew's great, but replacing Bob Barker in that gig is an impossible task for anyone. In fairness, I'd bet Drew was a better host on Whose Line is it Anyway than Bob Barker would have been. Although I think I may like Aisha Tyler better than Drew in that gig (though I may be biased by her gorgeousishness).
Odd Couple - Randall and Klugman, hands down. Incredible chemistry. Not that Matthau and Lemmon weren't great.
ReplyDeletePrice Is Right - Bill Cullen. You'd be hard-pressed to find a wittier host.
Just saw someone else's suggestion that David Hyde Pierce would be perfect as Felix. I couldn't agree more. If you haven't seen DOWN WITH LOVE, an update of the Rock Hudon-Doris Day movies where DHP plays the Randall role, you're missing a wonderful performance by him.
ReplyDeleteBill Cullen?! Geez, how old ARE you people?
ReplyDeleteWho is your favorite Felix & Oscar?

James Bond?
SIR SEAN CONNERY! Daniel Craig comes in a close second. Roger Moore is not even in the running. (It's not just growing up with him. I all read the books before all but the first movie was made, and Moore was not that guy in the books.)
Superman?
Yes, George Reeves, and yes, it's because I grew up with him. Mind you, I love Chris Reeve, have tremendous respect for him, and cherish the memory of the night I met him. I also have afondness for Kirk Alyn, but that's personal. We were neighbors for a while, and I liked him a lot personally. His Superman sucked, though.
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?)
None. Never seen a Batman I unreservedly liked.
Lois Lane?
Noel Niell, but it's personal. I've worked with her and known her slightly for 40 years. She always shows me the respect of remembering my name. I adore her.
Sherlock Holmes?
A tie between Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett. Am really liking Benedict Cumberbacth too, and I adore Peter Cushing in the role. (Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Downey Jr. play guys named "Sherlock Holmes," but they are NOT Sherlock Holmes! And once again, Roger Moore was bloody dreadful in the role)
Dr. Who?
Tom Baker.
Darrin Stephens?
Dick Sergent, but again, it's personal. I knew him slightly and liked him a lot.

Because he sucked as Superman, and that's even without his being a Republican, and thus opposed to all that Superman stands for. (Like helping others rather than oneself.)

The one from the 50s tv version seemed more close in style and look to the comic book character.
Batman
Keaton - I like how he wasn't an action star but a comedian, and did everything to create a plausible human feeling of the new franchise. Before it turned silly or dark.
Sherlock Holmes,
Rathbone, and especially with his Dr. Watson. There are at least six in the series, from 1939-1943. The continuity is perfect. Dialog driven as Holmes should be.
Darrin Stephens
Dick York. Wonderful rapport with Montgomery, best facial and body language.
Hawkeye
Alda - but he only got it after the first year or so, ditching Groucho.
Host of Price is Right?
Barker is the Price is Right.
But I think it was overdue that Barker moved on. Carrey brought back energy and identified with the audience a bit more.
Wow, a question for me :) Thanks, MacGllroy.
ReplyDeleteDoctor Who is pretty big here, being a part of our cultural history for decades, much bigger than in the US (I believe they simultaneously screened the first episode of the new series in cinemas here, and enough people attended to place it in the UK top 10)... but I was never a fan. There didn't seem to be any consistent backstory that I could grab onto. I never really knew what was going on, and so I never really cared.
The recent reboot has been great to watch from the sidelines. They've obviously made huge strides in revitalising the show, but even when I do catch an episode, I still find them very rough around the edges -- even if they've become much more fun and far better written than they used to be. (I really enjoyed the Christmas episode with John Hurt.) But I guess the roughness is part of the show's heritage and charm :)
I've been meaning to watch the new Peter Capaldi Dr Who, because I think he's a very interesting choice, but I was a little put off by the lukewarm reactions I've heard -- Namely that they haven't really figured out who this new Doctor is yet.
(Makes me think they should have cast a woman in the role to really shake things up, but hopefully Capaldi will find his feet.)
From what I can gather from my Doctor Who loving friends (a lot of whom are American), David Tenant is still considered the high watermark, but there's a lot of hope on Capaldi. Outside of that, it's definitely who you grew up watching :)
Hope I didn't ramble on for too long!
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteKlugman and Randall
James Bond?
SEAN CONNERY
Superman?
Christopher Reeve
Batman?
Adam West (yes really really!)
Lois Lane?
Amy Adams
It's not a great role to begin with, she is as good as any.
Sherlock Holmes?
Basil Rathbone
He fights Nazis too!
Dr. Who?
Matt Smith
Darrin Stephens?
who?
Hawkeye?
Jeremy Renner
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
I've only seen Drew Carey
Klugman and Randall are my favorite Odd Couple; probably because due to time and the varying scripts they played, they had a opportunity to develop their characters more than Matthau and Lemmon did.
ReplyDeleteSean Connery as Bond, followed, unbelieveably, by Timothy Dalton.
George Reeves IS Superman. Discussion closed, no other opinions will be considered.
I liked Keaton's Batman.
Phyllis Coates Lois Lane is the gold standard. Phyllis could out act the others if she were playing a coma victim whose only action was to lie perfectly still on a bed for the duration of the film.
I'm old; Basil Rathbone is my Sherlock Holmes; though Nicol Williamson was great in The Seven Percent Solution.
Dr Who? Who?
Dick York was a better, whinier Darrin Stephens.
Hawkeye, well Alan Alda; see the reasoning given for my Odd Couple choice. Sutherland was outstanding in his one appearance as Hawkeye in the film. Can't believe he wouldn't have grown the role as Alda did, he's a fine actor.
The Price is Right - Dennis James.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar? Tony Randall and Jack Klugman
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Roger Moore
Superman? George Reeves
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Adam West as Batman, but Keaton was a more interesting Bruce Wayne.
Lois Lane? Lesley Ann Warren in the musical
Sherlock Holmes? Basil Rathbone
Dr. Who? Peter Cushing
Darrin Stephens? Dick York
Hawkeye? Randolph Scott
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bill Cullen
Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteRandall and Klugman
James Bond?
Sean Connery
Superman?
Dean Cain actually.
Batman?
The animated version (Kevin Conroy VOX)
Lois Lane?
Teri Hatcher
Sherlock Holmes?
Jeremy Brett (this one's not even close)
Dr. Who?
David Tennent
Darrin Stephens?
Either I guess. Never watched Bewitched
Hawkeye?
Alan Alda
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Bob Barker and the original Barker's Beauties
Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteNever watched film or TV show, so I'll go with the majority.
James Bond?
I actually liked George Lazenby, but it has to be Daniel Craig.
Superman?
Christopher Reeve has so inhabited the role, no-one else can do it justice.
Batman?
Not really my glass of tea, but Keaton was OK.
Lois Lane?
Her off the TV series.
Sherlock Holmes?
Robert Stephens. That was a great film.
Doctor Who?
Not watched since Sylvester McCoy got regenerated, so Sylvester McCoy.
Darrin Stephens?
I only watched Barbara Eden. You mean there was someone else in that show?
Hawkeye?
Went cold on the preaching of the later TV show episodes, and I like the idea of picking Jeremy Renner, so him.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
Never watched. Is it even ON in Britland>
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar?
ReplyDeleteRandall & Klugman
James Bond? Sean Connery
Superman? George Reeves (or the voice of Bud Collyer)
Batman? Adam West (or the voice of Olan Soule)
Lois Lane? Noel Neill (or the voice of Joan Alexander)
Sherlock Holmes? Basil Rathbone
Dr. Who? David Tennant
Darrin Stephens? Dick York
Hawkeye? Alan Alda
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT?
"Gypsy Bob" Barker
Gidget? Sally Field
Talking Car? Ann Sothern
Wacky Neighbors? The Mertzes
Barnabas Collins? Jonathan Frid
Voice of Fred Flintstone? Alan Reed
Cinderella? Lesley Ann Warren
John Steed Partner? Diana Rigg
Peter Pan? Mary Martin
Billie Jo Bradley? Meredith Macrae
Unless you've stopped reading, Ken, here's a Friday question:
What stories can you tell about actors whom you did not cast that you have encountered since? And do you have actor friends, or does it make casting awkward?
Klugman & Randall were, without question, the perfect Oscar and Felix. As one person alluded, we lived we these characters for five years on prime-time and in perpetuity in syndication but it's more than just that. You always got the feeling, even when those two were on talk shows as "themselves," that Randall WAS Felix Unger and Klugman had aspects of Oscar's personality about him. Klugman was more of an intellectual than Oscar Madison but, beyond that, he seemed very Oscar-like. In fact, as the series went on, I think a little of the real Klugman creeped into Madison's character just as Randall's love for ballet and opera made its way into Unger's persona.
ReplyDeleteFor me, Bond is either Connery or Roger Moore. I say Moore probably because the very first 007 movie I saw as a kid starred Roger Moore. I don't care too much about Superman, Batman or Lois Lane.
As for Sherlock Holmes, I've seen only a few different actors but to me, Basil Rathbone will ALWAYS be Sherlock Holmes and vice versa. If I read a Sherlock Holmes story, I can't help but picture Rathbone.
Dr. Who - never seen it. Darrin Stevens is a no-brainer - Dick York. Hawkeye, I guess would be Alda but, again, we lived with him for 11 years as opposed to a two hour movie with Sutherland.
As for the Price Is Right, allow me to quote the great Billy Van, a sketch comedian I remember from "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" and "Bizarre," - "Try and imagine, how little I care."
Ken - you are great and this blog is great. Please keep it coming!

ReplyDeleteDr. Who - John Baker (only because of the fedora and the scarf)"
You mean the fedora and the scarf worn by TOM Baker? The Doctor has been played by Tom Baker (Wonderfully) and Colin Baker (Dreadfully), but never by anyone named "John Baker." Who he?

Hate to break it to you D. McEwan, but Republicans give more to charity than Democrats, according to many studies."
Any of those studies appear anywhere but Fox News? Making donations SOLELY to get tax breaks is not charity from the heart.
And charitable donations to one side, there's still the fact that they've tanked the economy, war mongered, filled congress with obstructionists that have paralyzed our government, raped the environment, crippled education while demonizing teachers, are endlessly backward on civil rights issues, have destroyed social programs for the disadvantaged to get tax cuts for the hyper-wealthy, think folks like that ignoramus Sarah Palin should govern us when they're barely literate, want to strictly control who can vote (If possible, only wealthy white maless, te only vote tehy court) while everyone should be allowed guns, and have been rotting our country from the inside out. I am proud to be called "Small" by a Republican apologist.
(I love that "According to many studies". That's right up there with "Many people say" and "The concensus is" for unattributed lies.)

Doug- thanks for making it multiple choice. Sara Jane Smith was the Dr. Who assistant I had in mind."
Excellent choice. The late Elizabeth Sladen was charming and delightful as Sarah Jane, and as she played the role off and on from 1974 to three years ago, certainly the longest-serving assistant.

Sherlock Holmes,
Rathbone, and especially with his Dr. Watson. There are at least six in the series, from 1939-1943. The continuity is perfect."
I assume you mean six movies not six Watsons. Actually Rathbone made 14 Holmes films. Nigel Bruce's Watson, while an amusing character, made Watson a buffoon who left you wondering how he passed medical school. Watsons have been struggling to make him intelligent again ever since. I am of the opinion that 12 of those movies (The ones made by Universal) run the gamut from mediocre to dreadful. Only the first two, made at 20th Century Fox are, in my opinion, any good. As for "Prefect Continuity," you're joking, right? There is no continuity. None. Moriarty is played by three different actors, and dies over and over. The first two take place in the late 19th century and the rest take place in the 1940s with Holmes and Watson not a day older. There is not the slightest trace of continuity, beyond Mary Gordon staying on as Mrs. Hudson. Rathbone was far better than most of his Holmes movies.

I really enjoyed the Christmas episode with John Hurt."
John Hurt was not in the Christmas episode. He was in the 50th Anniversary special episode, which ran a full month before Christmas. But it was really good. I saw it in a theater in 3-D.
There is a very detailed and lengthy backstory to the series, but if you don't know it, it can seem rough around the edges. Capaldi has found his feet. He's terrific in the role, bringing back some Jon Pertwee older-flash to the role.

ReplyDeleteLike I said, at lest six, but fourteen is more like I imagined - I had just glanced at IMDB to check and only saw those. They all seemed to blur into each other, catching them at late night tv.
I don't mind bumbling Watson but I get that purists wanted real Watson.
As for continuity, I meant something different perhaps, that belongs to the best of serialized cinema. The changing actors for Moriarty, or even fighting Nazis suddenly, wasn't felt because these were very very good B movies, serial movies. They adapted to market and needs but produced something special and with a sense of familiarity like a good character should, and that in turn produced a powerful sense of continuity to me - it was once ongoing very particular black and white B movie world, stagey film atmosphere, Rathbone's character, bumbling Watson, the interiors etc. Worked even better on tv at late night too.
Who is your favorite Felix & Oscar? Lemmon and Matthau
ReplyDeleteJames Bond? Connery
Superman? Christopher Reeve
Batman? (Michael Keaton? Really?) Kevin Conroy
Lois Lane? Dana Delany
Sherlock Holmes? Peter Cushing
Dr. Who? Eisei Amamoto
Darrin Stephens? Dick York
Hawkeye? Sutherland
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? I have never seen it.
Who is your favorite...
ReplyDeleteSuperman? George Reeves. He was not only a convincing Superman, but he was also a father figure, something the guys who followed him were too young to pull off. His is the first celebrity death I can remember; I was six.
Lois Lane? Paulette Goddard. She played Lois once, during a radio program called Command Performance, on 10 November 1946, opposite Bob Hope as Superman. I'm not ranking anybody ahead of Paulette Goddard, but I'd put Joan Alexander right behind her.
Host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT? Bill Cullen. I once dated a lady who'd been a contestant on a Cullen-hosted $10,000 Pyramid. Cullen wore leg braces because he'd had polio, but he told the lady that he'd been grievously wounded in combat while serving as a Marine during World War II -- this in an obvious attempt to chat her up, the dog. Anyone with that much brass has got my vote, as long as he's safely dead.
Happy New Year, Ken.

Fortunately, darling, it makes Roger the one I can't remember. Thank Dog for blackouts.
Bond? Has to be Lazenby. But that's because it's the best script of them all - there's actually a genuine emotional arc for the character.
ReplyDeleteKen, you of all people should understand that actors are replaceable - but good writing is irreplaceable.
