As a refreshing change, I will be on CNN tonight instead of Donald Trump. This evening CNN is premiering its 7-part documentary series THE EIGHTIES. As with THE SEVENTIES I will be on talking about television. For maybe 45 seconds. However, last year's TV-themed episode was an hour. This year it's two full hours. So I hope to be on for 50 seconds. But still, that's 50 less seconds of Donald Trump speculating on journalists' menstrual cycles.
It airs at 9 PM Eastern & Pacific, and then probably nine times this weekend.
Let's hope (for at least that two-hour period) that Trump doesn't announce he's dropping out of the race.
ReplyDeleteMind you, I still fully expect that will now happen before the GOP convention.
Donald Trump was already an established and inescapable part of New York City's life in the 1980s, like Crazy Eddie ads or subway graffiti. So instead of Trump clips from 2016 tonight, CNN may just spend most of the hour with Trump clips from 1986....
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until CNN gets up to the 2010s, and you talk about this blog.
ReplyDeleteEven if you only get 50 seconds, I hope the amazing show you helped create, CHEERS, will get more than that. The 80s were a remarkable decade and I can't wait to see what CNN does with their documentary.
ReplyDeleteUpcoming tweet from Donald Trump:
ReplyDeleteKen Levine is the worst screenwriter. Just terrible. That's why no one hires him.
Thanks for the tip. I just the DVR.
ReplyDeleteCHEERS aside, obviously, what other shows does THE EIGHTIES touch on? Because to be honest, I felt a little disappointed with THE SIXTIES and THE SEVENTIES: THE SIXTIES seemed to touch very little on those fantastic sitcoms that seemed to almost define that decade, such as BEWITCHED, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, and others; meanwhile, I expecting a little more emphasis on M*A*S*H on THE SEVENTIES.
ReplyDeleteDallas, Hill Street Blues, Cops, Cosby Show, Garry Shandling, Miami Vice, ET, St Elsewhere...
ReplyDeleteWhy did James burrows get a "created by" credit on cheers if he never wrote an episode? What are wga's rules on creators at least back then because now if I recall correctly you have to at least write the pilot (and even then some people who write the pilot dont even get the created by credit.)
ReplyDeleteWow Ken, you were on a LOT in this one. Lots of shows got a mention, too, and for a good bit of time with each one. I was born in the early '80s, so most of the shows were ahead of my time except for MASH & CHEERS re-runs, but it was still interesting. Naturally "Who Shot JR?" was mentioned a lot, as was the MASH finale. I wasn't expecting call-outs to LIFESTYLES OF THE RICH & FAMOUS, nor GARRY SHANDLING'S SHOW (I wonder how much of that was a sudden edit because of Shandling's death, and how much was to fit their "outside the box" theme?).
ReplyDeleteYou got some decent time! I love these on CNN. The 60s and 70s were well done and last night's was great, esp the Ken segments!
ReplyDeletePretty good show, Ken! I think you got sixty seconds and not fifty. The Cheers segment was too short though.
ReplyDeleteas expected, i got all misty-eyed & fahklempt.
ReplyDeleteIt was good! And you were good! Not Tom Hanks good, but....
ReplyDeleteExcellent explanation of the appeal of CHEERS. I think it will lead a lot of people to watch (or re-watch) the show.
ReplyDeleteI shut it off when Ted Turner showed up. Nice self-congrats, CNN.

ReplyDeletePhrasing!
