I was just discussing this at a rehearsal last night. Many of my theater nerd friends would rather go see a dark, depressing, heavy-handed show than a lighthearted comedy (which is fine, we like what we like). But they make it abundantly clear that lighthearted comedies and shows like that will always be second rate to this heavy "artsy" stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhat incredible timing for this podcast! Dick Van Dyke is from my hometown. Last night I received a package in the mail from my mom -- it was a 1942 Danville High School yearbook with Dick Van Dyke as a sophomore in it. A great-aunt of mine was in his class, and when she passed away a few weeks ago, my mom snapped up the yearbook because it was just going to go in the trash. She sent it to me as a surprise because she knows how much of a DVD fan I am.

I spent most of last night poring over the yearbook to find all of the photos of Dick Van Dyke. To find that your podcast was DVD-themed this morning just made my day!
I'll have to give this to my 13 y.o. daughter to listen to. She's watched the box set of the DVDS on DVD

ReplyDeleteWould Joey Bishop's sitcom qualify as copying The Dick Van Dyke Show? Joey's character was a TV show host and a family man. The show depicted both halves of his life.
