Re: the acronym thing, I generally use "queer" as an umbrella term for anyone outside the norms of gender and sexuality. Although there is also some controversy surrounding the use of the term among the community because of its history as a slur, so maybe try to be careful about how you use it (I'm a relatively young queer man, so I don't have a lot of personal experience with that history, which is why I'm personally comfortable with it). I've also seen or heard the acronyms "LGBTQIA+" or "QUILTBAG" used as umbrella terms.
