Zaxby's Heart Raycom Nova Home Loans Bad Boy Mowers Blog Post

It’s bowl season. There are so many now that your college team has to be 0-10 to not get into one of them. And now with corporate sponsorship glomming onto them the names for these bowl games have become ridiculous. What follows are the ACTUAL names of these college bowl games. I’m not making these up. And where’s the Week Wacker Bowl? What happened to that one?

AutoNation Cure Bowl

Raycom Media Camellia Bowl

Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl

  1. Playstation Fiesta Bowl sounds more like something I'd order at Taco Bell.

  2. No Campbell Soup Bowl? How about Frosted Flakes Bowl! Pro Bowler Tour Bowl?

  3. Incredible -- those names read just like a Mad Magazine satire.

  4. Does anyone else wonder if the Outback Bowl is, in fact a small shack with a half moon?

  5. What was known as the "Weed-Whacker Bowl" was the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl. I guess some company called Walk-Ons is sponsoring it now.

  6. It’s ridiculous and tongue-twisting enough to make one head to the porcelain bowl. Granted that company-sponsored radio & TV shows reflected their names at one time (e.g. Texaco Star Theatre, The Colgate Comedy Hour), but would an audience be receptive to “Anheuser-Busch InBev Cheers” reruns? Would they even care?

  7. I really miss the Popeil Pocket Fisherman Bowl. Once Ronco took over the magic was gone.

  8. I quite like "Bad Boy Mowers Bowl." Why did they have to spoil the poetry by adding the word "Gasparilla" in there? No sense of rhythm, these people.

I also propose "Brother of the More Famous Idaho Potato Bowl." (To be held in Utah, obviously. No coffee or alcohol served. Or do I mean "Neighbor?")

And following on from the earlier comment, I can't believe that there's no such thing as the "Kohler Porcelain Bowl." Think of the marketing! And the half-time show!

  9. Yes, some of those names are absurd, but irrelevant. I wouldn't care if one was called, "The Preparation-H Itchy, Inflamed Rectum Bowl" if it was a good game. But that's the problem. Thanks to ESPN and other cable outlets usurping the rights to the major, established bowl games e.g. the Rose Bowl, I no longer get to see any of them. All we get on broadcast T.V. are the minor schools with mediocre records playing in these ridiculously named, Who Gives a Damn(?!) Bowls. Ah, for the good old days when you'd wake up on New Years morning, watch one or more repeats of the Rose Parade on channel 5 and then switch over to the Rose Bowl. But no more. Don't even get me started on the college championship games.

  10. The Bob Marley Memorial Bowl.

  11. I'm at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at 7th & Flower (should've bought a Winter Dream Tea to celebrate the season's arrival this morning) and hear a contemporary version of the Irving Berlin standard "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" over the sound system. CB&TL plays occasional seasonal songs this time of year, but this is the first time I've ever heard this one associated with it at any place that pipes in music. Kudos to whomever at the company selects the songs.

  12. What exactly is a Belk? And surely Quick Lane Bowl is the name of a bowling alley. With super-fast pin spotters and a ball return that's actually dangerous.

    Thank you. This is hilarious.

  13. I miss the insight.com Bowl. They started their sponsorship in the mid-90's when everybody was getting their first computers and ISP accounts. I never went to the URL to see what the company did.

  14. I remember when I thought it was ridiculous that Blockbuster Video had it's own bowl game. And a few weeks after it was played, you rent the VHS copy of the game in case you wanted to watch it again. I have no idea why you want to do such a thing but you could.

  15. I keep waiting for Waste Management to sponsor either a bowl game or stadium.

    1. They sponsor a golf tournament. Fans are encouraged to act like garbage. Really.

  16. For the sake of consistency, the Walk-On's Independence Bowl should be played with teams composed entirely of walk-ons.

(For what it's worth, Walk-On's is a restaurant chain co-owned by Drew Brees, so there is at least some football connection. His business partner played basketball for LSU as a walk-on, hence the name.)

  17. The sad thing is that the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl is being played in a stadium with artificial turf.

  18. You missed the best bit about one of this year's bowls, which clearly didn't consider its corporate sponsor when picking one of the teams.

Namely, the Foster Farms Bowl has Purdue as one of its teams. OK, it's spelled differently from chicken competitor Perdue, but it's pronounced the same....

  19. My annual snarky comment is, "What is the price of tickets at the Dollar General Bowl?"

  20. Insight is still around. They are an online retailer of computer hardware and software, among other things.

Belk is a department store chain based in Charlotte NC.

  21. Is the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl still going? I wonder what a good sponsor for that would be. Stagg Chili?
