Batman: Christian Bale. Has the gravitas of the original character from Bob Kane and Bill Finger.
Catwoman: Julie Newmar, whose physicality (which too often overwhelmed other roles she received) and sensual humor made this catburglar wonderfully vivid, despite the series' camp tone.
Wonder Woman: Lynda Carter, who simply looks more Amazonian than Gal Gadot, though the movie on the whole is superior.
Norman Bates: Anthony Perkins, who made the character iconic.
Sherlock Holmes: Basil Rathbone. (John Barrymore played Holmes in a 1922 version that was the film debut of William Powell.)
Ann Darrow (King Kong heroine): Fay Wray, though she was far more than a scream queen. Check her out in the 1928 von Stroheim silent "The Wedding March."

Why I was lucky to grow up watching soap operas:
ReplyDeleteThat unjustly maligned genre taught me at an early age that any actor can be replaced - at any time.
The lesson was clear; you can compare and contrast as much as you please - you can even have an overall preference if you like.
But the way so many people approach this is to treat fictional characters as a odd kind of "sacred trust" - and that's just silly.
Coming up on 70 (way too fast for comfort), I've seen a lot of the different characters on your list - and bypassed as many more, all voluntarily.
A a teenager, I started watching old Charlie Chan movies on Saturday afternoons.
Who was my favorite - Warner Oland or Sidney Toler?
And truthfully - why the hell did I have to choose?
Because I'm in a crappy mood this morning, I'll close with this personal observation:
My favorite Mike Karr was Forrest Compton.

ReplyDeleteI'm a Bud Collyer Superman buff. The radio show takes three years to get through if you listen to the MP3s every day, and one episode seems to last the exact time it takes for the 18 Bus to show up. Like any soap, you get attached the the characters. By the way, future Bette Davis spouse Gary Merrill plays Batman, and he's the fun-loving one. Agnes Moorhead played Lara, Superman's mother, the same year she acted in Citizen Kane.
Believe it or not, I have an autographed photo of George Lazenby as James Bond framed in my living room. It's a constant reminder to not screw up my career if I ever get one again.
Paul Soles is the most versatile Spider-Man, having previously appeared in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as the elf who wants to be a dentist. He's still a mainstay of Canadian Radio.
My Favorite Hulk is Steve Ditko's, especially the time Bruce Banner's head refused to change over the huge green body and he had to wear a Hulk mask to keep his identity secret. They had no clue what to do with the character back then.
Frankie is the Only Danny Ocean (and I capitalize Only). Pity poor director Lewis Milestone, who had to go straight from one-take Sinatra on Oceans 11 to eighty-take Brando on Mutiny on the Bounty. He probably pined for the calm of All Quiet on the Western Front.
My favorite Sherlock Holmes is Peter Cook. Not that awful Hound of the Baskervilles movie, but check YouTube for an incredible TV sketch with Dudley Moore as Watson. You have to really love a character to do such an acidic parody.
My Favorite Elizabeth Bennett is Jane Austen.
Fay Wray forever, though her career burned out after an intense series of films. Because of the long delays in King Kong due to the special effects, the filmmakers had her alternating roles between that and The Most Dangerous Game during the same time frame. No matter which movie, she was still near nude, drenched, and running through the same damn jungle.

ReplyDeleteOn Sherlock, it will always be Jeremy Brett, but even as purist I have a high regard for how beautifully the current Sherlock is being done. Cumberbatch would have been a great Holmes if the stories were set in their era, as he was in the episode where they went back in time. It may have been worth asking for the best Watson, because while Basil Rathbone was great as Holmes, Nigel Bruce played Watson (of his own volition or under orders) as something of a clod, which a doctor whose presence Holmes tolerated would have been unlikely to be.

ReplyDeleteBy the way, there used to be a great little office supply store right around the corner from my apartment. Time-wise, it probably saved me several years of life because popping over there for manila envelopes or legal pads took about as long as getting in and out of the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteIt was also a great place to hang around in, since the owners had been there for years and would chat with all the regulars. One classy-looking lady seemed to love it there. Only later did I realize she was Julie Newmar. You'd have thought I'd recognize THE Catwoman at once, but I guess at a certain age a woman gives up spandex.
I've met Julie several times; we're Facebook friends. I interviewed her when she appeared at a memorabilia show in NJ in 1997. She's not quite as imposing as she was in her heyday, but still a beauty. A bright lady, and quite funny too. (Her primary influences were Rita Hayworth for dance and Carole Lombard -- hooray! -- for comedy.) I adore her...and she's probably the prime reason this 5-foot-7 guy has such fondness for tall women.

ReplyDeleteI believe that the original idea with Peter Cushing was to make him a time-travelling surgeon. Which would obviously be of more use, given that you're unlikely to be able to dole out prescription drugs to alien beings with wildly unusual physiognomies, whereas cutting into them with a sonic scalpel would make more sense. Peter Cushing was therefore better referred to as "Mr Who."

TL;DR -- "Park Street Under" was a locally produced Boston sitcom from the late 1970s. It was set in a Boston bar, and has some similarity to the later "Cheers" -- an ex-athlete bartender, a very bright waitress, etc. Could "Cheers" have been a rip-off of this local sitcom, which was generally unseen outside of Boston?
There are clips at the link above that will pretty much prove that even if the concepts of the two shows are broadly similar, the actual writing and execution aren't. Kind of like how "Car 54 Where Are You" and "Barney Miller" are both about New York city police officers, but they are not the same show....
Sylvester McCoy wasn't responsible for the demise of Doctor Who in the 80s. The BBC spent very little money, resulting in a cheap looking show, and the executives at the time admitted years later they didn't like the show and were keen to ditch it.

As for the two characters that replaced Sellers after his death-Ted Wass as Clifton Sleigh and Roberto Begnini as Jacques Gambrelli-they were pretty funny for their characters with Wass ahead of Begnini on that point...

I'll add my 2c for George Lazenby as Bond - because of the writing. OHMSS is the only Bond where the main character has any real sort of character arc.

Like to give a tip of the hat to Peter Weller. I did enjoy the Jack Webb reference, but Peter was the favorite RoboCop of all those who answered seriously. I used to play baseball with him when he was in Los Angeles. Nice guy. Innntense guy. But he really created a lasting impression and character.
