Fox called the election for Biden so it must be fake news. (Place Sarcasm Emoji here). Actually this is the part of the movie where you wake up and it was all a bad dream. The Wizard of Oz was just a snake oil salesman exposed by a little dog. Babbling... Giddy with relief.
Congratulations from Central Europe. Biden and Harris are not exactly innovators or part of the political avant-garde, but right now stability, sanity and reason are more important. I'm hoping the new administration can stabilise the listing ship.
After 4 years I feel like I can exhale! Let's ALL wake up from this nightmare and move forward. Finally, no more text messages from a demented toddler President. America can hold her head up proud again. Janice B.
This is a terrific day, but to paraphrase someone I saw on Reddit, it's still a long time to Inauguration Day. It's like that moment in the horror movie where the Monster's been killed but there is still 20 minutes remaining in the film...
I knew we could do it. As dark as it sometimes was, I never gave up on the idea of the country coming together this month to end four years of unequaled depravity.
The good guy (and good gal) finally won. Even better, that "gal," er, woman is a wondrous blend of South Asian and Jamaican ancestry, popularly perceived as "black" but part of the American melting pot.
Tom Sullivan at Hullabaloo summed up my feelings exactly:
"The expected Biden win feels more like a stay of execution than a victory for this creaky republic."
Democrats ran the least threatening candidate and just barely managed to defeat a sociopath moron. Yet the leadership continues to believe that the path to victory is to stay the course and let the opposition define who they are, and they still won't recognize that the Republicans are fighting a war where all is fair as long as you win.
I commented once, but I have to say something again, today feels like there should be fireworks tonight celebrating a day on par with independence. I feel unburdened.
No cause for "celebration". As several commenters imply, Trump is a symptom of a more profound problem. Yes, he made our national disease(s) much worse, but corruption, dysfunction and division in America are ever present.
The last time there was anything approaching unity of purpose in America was World War Two. In the generations since then, the national fabric has slowly, or not so slowly, been unraveling.
Our problems are not readily solvable, and blog comments will not make them disappear. The best I can do, as an individual, is try to live my own life with as much good intention as possible. We need to invest, particularly in future generations. Something that we have failed at, miserably, over the past 70 years.
At the end of World War 2, we had V-E Day and V-J Day. Yesterday I've been referring to as V-A Day (A for America, of course). Nice to have a victory over fascism using a ballot box or machine instead of tanks, guns, and bombs.
To put a more TV sitcom spin on it, I can imagine Michael Scott of Dunder-Miflin Scranton upstaging Joe Biden while celebrating the president-elect's win. "YAAAAAAAAY, SCRANTON!" - Michael, standing between the news camera and Mr. Biden.
The Democrats made a giant-sized mistake this time: They didn't go after Mitch McConnell. Not full-bore, as they tried to with Graham and Collins (and that didn't play out).
For years, we Americans have held a cherished myth: The President of the United States is the most powerful man in the world. That just isn't so. We have a Constitution that specifically prohibits that. Truth to tell, there is no elected head of state anywhere in the world whose powers are as limited as POTUS. Donald Trump didn't know that, of course; he just went around "being in charge", while his minions were really running things. That's how Mitch McConnell became the most powerful man in DC, even before Trump became POTUS; remember how he thwarted Obama's judicial appointments, almost singlehandedly. Once he had a Republican POTUS in place, Mitch went to town, packing the Federal courts with right-wing ideologues - and it mattered not a whit who held the top post: any GOP hack would have done nicely (I doubt that Trump could have picked any of his 'appointments' out of a police lineup). So anyway, McConnell is still in place as the GOP Senate leader, and unless the two Democrats in Georgia prevail in their elections, he's still the Majority Leader, which effectively gives him veto power over any appointments that Biden wants to make.
Welcome back, my friends, to The Show That Never Ends ...
As "unknown" said above, I'm an atheist as well. But I far prefer the Catholic Biden over the fake Christian and likely atheist. It's hard to fathom Trump believing there's any power higher than himself because his ego won't allow it. Whereas Biden is rock solid in his father but he's never thrown it in someone else's face or demanded other live by the same religious rules he follows. He lets his faith guide him while relying on science and respecting others to let them decide what's best for themselves.
Words can't express how utterly relieved I am at this news. It is true that we've still got a lot of work to do, and we need to keep fighting to further tamp down any remnants of Trumpism that keep rearing their ugly heads. And we need to do more to fight the GOP as well.
But for now, I'm just going to celebrate this particular victory, and begin my countdown of how many days we've got left to put up with Trump :p. Looking so forward to January.
I spent a few minutes (a very few minutes) looking at Fox News and its stepchild, OANN.
Just enough time to note that both nets are going all-in on The Great Fraud story. They're setting themselves up as The New Resistance - and when the First Team comes back from the weekend, we may expect a dumping of major dimension (or should I say bigly?).
You can't let down your guard. The fact is, it was never Trumpism to begin with; DJT was never more than a front man with a public presence - and now his family moves in to take up the slack. And the really dangerous one, Mitch McConnell (op cit.), is still in place in the Senate.

Kinda late for this but here is my visual take on the last 20 years. With GW Bush driving the country he ran us into a ditch (Iraq). DJ Trump had us heading off a very steep cliff into a river of lava and all his lemmings were cool with it. Joe Biden had grabbed the wheel and saved us from a Thelma and Louise finish.

NOW we can work on making America great again :)

ReplyDeleteLet the champagne flow.
ReplyDeleteFascism has been defeated once again. And this time, we didn't even have to invade Normandy to do it.
ReplyDeleteA good day!
ReplyDelete"My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over. The Constitution works." -- President Gerald Ford
ReplyDeleteI think that I'm more relieved than excited.
ReplyDeleteTHANK GOODNESS! I'm most looking forward to NOT having to talk & think about politics all the time. Sweet sweet sanity, at last!

ReplyDeleteJohn McCain and John Lewis are laughing and slapping high fives.
ReplyDeletehe's got AZ and NV. And I hope GA, though I've given up on NC.
ReplyDeleteI like this tweet by Mike Scully of The Simpsons: "Ok Twitter, back to jokes about how long CVS receipts are"
ReplyDeleteI feel badly that Earl P did not live to see this happen.
ReplyDeleteThe fat lady is singing! So it might as well be the best damn fat lady singing a most appropriate song for today!

ReplyDeleteDoes this mean we'll never get to hear Trump's new health care plan?

ReplyDeleteFor the Trump supporters-NO FOUR MORE YEARS! NO FOUR MORE YEARS!
ReplyDeleteIt feels like I've finally pissed out a kidney stone that was stuck inside me for four years.

Sorry to be Debbie Downer. Life goes on.
Writing from the UK, glad you guys can start to get back to something less crazy. Hopefully this time next year the world is in a better state
ReplyDeleteTrump's out, which is swell. But he actually got more votes, which is horrifying. And no one seemed to have been penalized for enabling him.
ReplyDeleteCan he start today?

Too bad we have to endure a few more months with 45 at the helm. I shudder to think the evil he might bring to us before he is officially out!
