things I like (I'm a bit phlegmatic for 'love') that it seems hip to hate on the internet:
White chocolate Thanksgiving dinner, including roast turkey The X-Men movies with Ian McKellan and Hugh Jackman Saturday Night Live (mostly, though old age usually prevents me from understanding Pete Davidson)
Thanks Ken for including my response in your podcast. I feel honored. I enjoyed listening to others' lists. I did agree on some of the choices. "Ferris Bueller" is one of my films I hate but I think I know why. When you're a kid, the teenager that's literally too cool for school is something to aspire to. As an adult now, I see his selfishness and complete disregard for others. I wanna smack him...
I will DEFEND "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". It's not a feel good party song but a true and epic tale. I live in Duluth, MN on the shores of the 'Big Gitchee Goomie" and the store of the Fitz is revered around here. I think you have to be near a shipping harbor to understand the gravity of the narrative. I have heard Lightfoot sing it in concert and it is a show stopper. Again, thanks Ken.
One obvious example of someone Ken loved that others hated would be Anderson Cooper as a guest host of Jeopardy. Ken recently raved about his two week gig hosting Jeopardy (he was very good) and yet Cooper had the lowest ratings of every guest host to date.
No doubt that's in large part due to Cooper's main job as an anchor for CNN, and not Fox Faux News.
By the way, it was in connection with Christopher Lee's heavy metal version of it that you can click through in the post to hear on YouTube. Imagine that you just got your newborn to sleep, and someone shows up and starts playing that.
Agree with you about Thanksgiving dinner, Jim. It's the worst. Too many dishes and too many guests to corral means at least half your meal is always served cold. Plus, no-one really likes turkey, they just pretend to. If they did, they would make it more than twice a year.
Stairway To Heaven and Hotel California seem to get on every list of "Things You Hate, but everyone loves". I love both songs. Those songs were progressive for their time, in that they were instrumental heavy, rather than vocal heavy and longer than the standard of two or three minutes. As the yardsticks have moved in really the right direction, they are considered anything but progressive.
"Hate" seems a little strong for things that are easily avoided, like white chocolate and coffee. I would reserve it for life's unavoidable miseries: those "ask your doctor" pill commercials, yappy little dogs and baggers who always put the eggs in the bottom of the bag before piling cans on top. Did no one mention robocalls? Religious TV? The idiotic new "sports" ESPN uses as filler like "corn hole," which is really beanbag? I really need to get out of the house.

The opposite would also be interesting: things you love that most others seem to hate.
ReplyDeleteTo Fred, Cauliflower Broccoli, Mushrooms, White Chocolate, Root canals (ok, kidding on the last one)!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely agree with Fred's comment above: now that we've done this, it'd be great to hear the reverse: the things you love that others hate.
ReplyDeleteCoffee, Robin Williams, summer.

Re: "The Little Drummer Boy." Here's a post from our "Hollywood Hi-Fi" page with a cartoon based on that song that put me on the floor:

ReplyDeleteI listened to hear you mention my biggest bugbear—anonymous complainers!—when I remembered I hadn’t submitted it.
ReplyDeleteHere is a YouTube link that underscores my point. Thanks for including me:

I don't know if anyone actually loves it or everyone just feels they're stuck with it but I truly loathe the "Happy Birthday" song.
