We hear all the time that we spend a third of our lives sleeping. What about other precious time?
How much time that we’ll never get back do we spend…
Idling at intersections?
Waiting in doctors’ waiting rooms?
Trying on clothes we don’t wear?
Going through TSA inspections?
Re-reading paragraphs of books we’ve already read?
Talking to phone solicitors?
Sitting through commercials before movies start?
Waiting on the line for tech support?
Waiting in line at Starbucks?
Sitting on tarmacs?
Watching the little spinning beach ball?
Waiting for rock concerts to begin?
Channel surfing?
Reading bad jokes people email us?
Sending bad jokes to others?
Wrapping presents?
Stuck in traffic?
Playing Angry Birds?
Watching bad movies because we paid to see them?
Standing at bus stops?
Scrolling through Facebook postings of your friends’ adorable pets?
Reading this blog?
I consider that the hours I spend reading Ken's blog are golden- help me cultivate horse-sense, and a cool head, and a keen eye.
ReplyDeleteI actually find re-reading paragraphs of (good) books I've previously read a not-so-bad use of time. I don't know how many times I've re-read Catch-22.
ReplyDeleteIt beats the alternative.
ReplyDeleteSlow computers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post, Ken, especially the mention of the spinning beach ball, or, as I refer to it, the "pinwheel of anxiety," as I had to deal with it just yesterday when my I-Mac repeatedly shut down/restarted and this for a period of nearly two hours (and on a day when I got up especially early so I wouldn't have to rush - talk about irony!). What a PITA technology can sometimes be!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you posting today. I was concerned about you when my, and undoubtedly countless others, heart stopped when yesterday's Jeopardy's contestants looked like deer caught in headlights by the question [Spoiler Alert] "Little Cheers ditty / 'Bout Sam & Diane / Diane played by this actress / Doing the best she can." Anyhow, I don't count watching Jeopardy as time that I’ll never get back, except for the twenty-three minutes I lose every night having to pause the show just when it's starting because that's when the girlfriend decides she has to use the bathroom.
ReplyDeleteReading bad jokes people email us?
ReplyDeleteI know a guy who goes door to door telling people about the benefits of herbal oil.
That's right. He's a Jojoba's Witness.
Groan! 🤨

...scrolling through Netflix trying (and failing) to find the least bad movie?
ReplyDeleteAlways remember, folks: «Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.» (Marthe Troly-Curtin, 1912.)
ReplyDeleteEvery moment I spend reading your blog is a good moment.
ReplyDeleteExcept for the baseball posts.
Waiting for Kenley Jansen or Pedro Baez to throw a pitch.
ReplyDeleteHaving to watch endless commercials pushing drugs they think I should take because I'm old.
ReplyDeleteReading your blog is never a waste of time. It's a joy.
Good news Ken, Roseanne is making a comeback and is trying to sell a new TV series.

We can expect a lot of blogs about that from you. ha ha .....
Composing rational replies to sponsored memes on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteAfter over a decade of reading this blog, it's become as important as the morning movement. Ken since you're over 30 and a comedy writing mensch (did I get that right?) I thought you'd appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteKen, it's hard to believe that much of your time is actually wasted considering your output. You write a daily blog, (Although, you do occasionally slip in some reruns) you do a weekly podcast, you write plays, (and direct some) you may be still writing TV scripts in secret, you take improv classes, (Or at least you did before COVID) you watch award shows, and you do all the little things of daily life such as eat, bathe, go shopping (Or maybe you have "people" for that) go to the bathroom, etc. So, unless you're ingesting large quantities of stimulants and/or never sleep it would appear that your time is fully utilized.
ReplyDeleteEven if I never wasted a minute in my day I couldn't do what you do.

P.S. I forgot to mention that you also draw cartoons! Sorry. It's been a rough week.

Friday Question: I’ve noticed on most multi-camera sitcoms that whenever a character pours a cup of coffee or tea, they barely fill the mug half way, if that. Is this to minimise the risk of actors accidentally spilling on their wardrobe, or so that no liquid is visible to help avoid mismatched shots where the contents noticeably rise and fall?
ReplyDeleteDon't know about anyone else, but I read this blog at work. So, I basically am getting paid when I read it.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget the wasted time on award shows....
Quite a number of hours have been blown by now if I add all the times over the years that I’ve had to retie my shoelaces, since they keep getting undone/keep coming loose. But I’m pretty sure my shoelace tying method is correct. I blame it on the shoelace manufacturers of the world. Somebody needs to invent a better shoelace.
