What a bizarre clip this is. I see Vin Scully everyday at the ballpark. I didn't know he once co-hosted the Rose Parade with Elizabeth Montgomery. Here is a rare promo for it featuring Vin Scully in BEWITCHED. Thanks to blog reader Michael for the tip.
That's so weird... you never really see Scully's face. It might even have been a body double.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I looked at it again, and I'm wrong. You do see Scully's face at first. But I doubt any director today would block it such that he would be facing away from the camera for so much of it.

ReplyDeleteHow could anyone top a pairing like that? The best announcer in baseball and the most gorgeous woman on network TV at the time.... Unfortunately, I don't remember watching the Rose Parade that year, which means I must have missed a once in a lifetime experience.... I do remember USC beating Indiana in the game, however (God, where was my head at?)....
ReplyDeleteIf Ken hadn't reported what a wonderful person Elizabeth was, I'd swear Ms. Montgomery literally upstaged Vin: the scene is blocked with her standing a few inches behind him, so he turns up-stage away from the camera....
ReplyDeleteScully is horribly upstaged but that's the director fault. And the camera operator should have noticed it too as well as the DP.
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is, just like Darrin, the next year Vin was replaced by Jerry Doggett.
ReplyDeleteGlad to provide the tip. Remember that it was on ABC and she was the star of the network's show. Vin's entire career with ABC was doing some golf 30 years later.
ReplyDeleteVin trivia: ABC offered him Monday Night Football. He didn't want to commit himself to year-round work in 1970, didn't want to give up the Dodgers, and reportedly didn't think he would work that well with Howard Cosell. How could he ever have thought that?

ReplyDeleteKolfax retired at the end of the '66 season because of his arthritis problem. The Dodgers needed some magic for 1967 after three World Series (and two titles) in the previous four years, but unfortunately, Liz would have had to have made Bob Gibson and Lou Brock disappear...
