A recommendation to writers

While we're on the subject today of writing...

This is a great opportunity -- your chance to hear major film and TV writers candidly discussing their writing process.

Winnie Holzman (Wicked, My So-Called Life) and Robin Schiff (Romy And Michele's High School Reunion and the brilliant Almost Perfect) lead a six night series of interviews, where they discuss one work from each writer, from inception through finished product. The first evening is March 13th, and you can buy individual classes as well as the entire series.

Their guests are Mike White (Enlightened); Russell Gerwitz (Inside Man);
Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon (Homeland); Lisa Kudrow and Michael Patrick King (The Comeback), Mike Mills (Beginners) and Florian Henckel von Donnersmark, who wrote and directed The Lives Of Others, which won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2007. Here's the link where you can get more info and buy tickets.

All proceeds go to the WGA Foundation, an organization near and dear to my heart.  But even if the money went to restock Barbra Streisand's aquarium I would still recommend this program.

  1. Thanks to the Writers Guild Foundation, which streams many of their events on-line.

    Nothing like actually being there, of course!

    Very cool. The Comeback has to be the most underrated TV comedy of the last decade. Just hilarious and awkward and weirdly relatable.

  4. Holzman, in addition to her other great credits, developed with her daughter Savannah Dooley one of the best shows of 2010, HUGE, which unfortunately only lasted 10 episodes. Wish I could make those screenings.

    Back to you Ken!

  6. Thanks for the heads up. The Lives of Others was the greatest movie of its year. I hope these things get released online in some form!

  7. Hi Ken. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I don't live in the US, but did manage to order myself five DVDs from their shop just now. Now comes a long week or two of waiting...

    I really enjoy your posts (all, and:) on the subjecet of creating stories (e.g. "How to create a series that lasts more than six episodes" and "Writing advice you might not want to hear"). I imagine this is what I'm missing out on, not being able to attend your workshops :)

    I was wondering if you have any recommendations regarding storytelling? Books/DVDs/whatever.
