Here's a movie trailer for THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE, a 1968 film about the inner workings of Hollywood. I defy you to find one frame of subtlety in this movie. I think even Faye Dunaway would say, "Whoa, ease up on the throttle." This movie makes THE OSCAR seem understated. My thanks to bad movie aficionado, Mark Legan for turning me onto this gem. I'm guessing it's not available on Netflix. Enjoy.

ReplyDeleteInterestingly, the director (Robert Aldrich) also made the classic WWII flick THE DIRTY DOZEN and THE LONGEST YARD (w/ Burt Reynolds), so he knows how to direct a successful movie. It's hard to imagine INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS without THE DIRTY DOZEN.

ReplyDeleteAccording to IMDb: "When MGM executives finally screened the film, they decided to market it as being "deliberately campy", but audiences in 1968 were not yet ready to embrace the idea of going to see something trashy on purpose, and the movie proved to be a box office bomb despite this trend-setting marketing ploy." Guess we in 2013 aren't ready either!

ReplyDeleteSure, the movie is cheese-on-toast, but most movie trailers of this era were just as ham-fisted with the over-wrought narration and the repetitive musical punctuation (or is that punch-uation?).
Kim Novak was a babe, though.
No wonder Kim Novack retired!

ReplyDeleteAldrich also directed Hannie Caulder, which I saw yesterday. And I'd rather see Kim Novak's naked back than Paris Hilton's naked front.
ReplyDeleteAnd suddenly I'm back in the summer of 1967, when my family first visited California, and while walking in Hollywood one evening, we stopped to watch this film crew shooting a limo pulling up to the Brown Derby (I'm pretty sure), and someone got out of the car and walked inside. Repeatedly. With long pauses in between. More than 45 years later, I have yet to stop and watch location filming again.

Kim Novak will be TCM's star of the month for September and yes, "The Legend Of Lylah Clare" will be included. Fortunately, it will be compensated for by the airing of "Vertigo," "Bell, Book And Candle," "Picnic" and others. (I'm guessing the channel is trying to make Novak one of its ambassadors, as it has for Eva Marie Saint and the late Ernest Borgnine and Esther Williams.)

And yes Robert Aldrich is a terrific director - he made the classic film noir KISS ME DEADLY, the original THE LONGEST YARD, the original FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX and other "camp" classics like WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE and HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE. For those who do enjoy high camp, this movie is a crazy trip!

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen LYLAH CLARE, but as others have mentioned, Robert Aldrich made a lot of great films, both before and after that one, and certainly doesn't deserved to be dismissed as another Ed Wood by people who don't seem to know anything about his career other than this trailer.
ReplyDeleteDan Ball: Yeah, that's the same Kim Novak who was upset about THE ARTIST using music from VERTIGO, which of course she had every right to do, no matter how many bad films she may have appeared in over the years (along with several great ones). And she was hardly alone in her opinion.
