Get ready to fall down laughing. Readers of my blog know how I tee off on KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin for his moronic questions on red carpet shows. Truth is, I like Sam personally. He's a nice guy, but JEEZUZ! Here he is live on KTLA's morning show interviewing Samuel L. Jackson... except he confuses him with someone else. This is a new instant classic.

ReplyDeleteI think *you* are the one who messed up, Ken. The reporter was referring to the Capt. America trailer shown during the Superbowl, not the Lawrence Fishburne commercial.
ReplyDeleteJackson brought up Lawrence Fishburne, not the reporter. Watch the video again. Jackson then proceeded to carry on, despite the reporter trying to get back on track by apologizing.
So actually, in this instance, Jackson was being an ass. He should have plugged his dumb movie, and moved on.
And as for you, try paying attention before devoting a post about what an idiot some guy is who you claim to nonetheless like personally. Makes you appear to be a passive-aggressive dick.

I'll bet that's exactly what happened. That, and he was trying to help Jackson sell his movie, and not try to "win" a racially charged argument with Samuel Jackson in what was supposed to be a light interview. He said he was sorry many times, and tried to move on. Jackson wasn't listening, and was the prime mover of douchebaggery in that exchange.
Now he's all over the internet being mob-tried and framed as an incompetent, and racially remedial, which is not true. Nobody in his position is going to mix up Lawence Fishburne with Samuel Jackson.
Sorry for being harsh. I hate internet mobs. They're wrong a lot of the time, and are long gone after the damage has been done. Like this time.

I hate to agree with somebody named Anonymous, but after reading his comment I realize that it WAS the Captain America trailer he was referring to.
ReplyDeleteI thought Jackson was funny though, and not genuinely angry. I thought he was busting the reporters' balls, and I give the guy (the reporter) credit for sticking it out.
Rubin played a clip from the Captain America trailer just before the interview started, so I'm inclined to believe him. The interview was still hilarious, though.
ReplyDeleteJackson is barely in the Captain America ad. When the reporter asked him if he got "a lot of a reaction" to it it was pretty clear (at least to me) that he was thinking of the Fishburne spot. And Jackson gave him a chance to recover before he went medieval on him...

Why would have Jackson have gotten a "lot of reaction" from it?
Whereas Laurence Fishburne appeared in a Super Bowl commercial as his character from THE MATRIX, which was noteworthy enough, but then he proceeded to sing opera in the back of Kia.

Hi John,
I watched the video. In it, an obnoxious tmz reporter claimed that Rubin referred to Samuel Jackson as Lawrence Fishburne.
That is qualified as a lie.
Rubin went on to indicate that his prep work prior to the interview was subpar. That is, he wasn't sure where Jackson was featured in the Super Bowl, though he knew Jackson was featured in some respect.
Again, that has ZERO to do with the premise Jackson (and Ken) drummed up, that some ignorant white cracker can't tell the difference between one highly accomplished black american and another.
It was also alleged by tmz that Rubin's apology to Jackson was rejected by Jackson. That would undermine your idea that he's "a cool guy." I hope that's not the case. I like Jackson, and would prefer not to think of him as a neurotic, self-centered douchebag.
Just keep this in mind: Rubin never mentioned Fishburne. That was all Samuel Jackson's fantasy, and that's my point.
So... looking fairly at what you've given me to examine, I'm afraid your friend Ken is still a bit douchey himself, for carrying on, and if anyone should be issuing an apology, it should be Ken, for trying to play entertainment reporter, which is not a big deal except he failed at the expense of Rubin, who has been a mench throughout the whole affair.
Btw, Johnny, you're not being a good friend by defending Ken when he's wrong. I know you've already committed yourself, so backing down isn't an option for you, but consider the idea for next time.

ReplyDeleteI got the feeling Jackson jumped in with a wisecrack, heard the off-camera laughs and began to run with it. It might not have been the most fair or correct comment, but it was understandable in terms of an actor's natural instinct to milk a laugh -- especially with the immediate encouragement he was hearing.
I remembered Garry Marshall and Mel Brooks in interviews where they began playing to the interviewers' camera crews, because that's where they heard actual laughs coming from.

That mistake was all my own. And to be honest, I think I confused about five different things. There WAS a Captain American clip that DID run during the Super Bowl, although I don't know if [Samuel L Jackson] was featured in that clip. There are those credit card commercials, and then of course there was the Laurence Fishburne car commercial.

The minute I realised it, I said to [Samuel L Jackson] I was sorry for it.
I really pride myself on the fact that unlike a lot of people who do this kind of work, more often than not I really do know what I'm talking about, but I didn't [during that segment] and I'm really embarrassed about it, and I very much apologize to Samuel L. Jackson and anyone else who was offended for what was a very amateur mistake.
Good onya Sam. We are all human and make mistakes.
