ReplyDeleteOpinion of a nobody: It seems to me the creators of this movie achieved their goal---every scene/line/gesture is absurd.
Confession: I thought the premise was funny (a one half hour show entitled The Pinwhistle Hour).
Worse confession: I thought some of the lines were funny ("I've been eating this popcorn for years, it's sort of a hobby.")
I saw Jerry Wallace about 26 years ago at a Parks and Rec center. Massive gut, good voice.

ReplyDeleteThere's something so bizarrely fascinating about how terrible it is. I first found out about it when I went to an event devoted to screening trashy trailers and kitsch TV commercials from back in the day. This one stood out and also "audience reaction" TV spots where people talked enthusiastically about how much they loved Critters 2 and Elm Street 2, one kid saying rather randomly "The Critters like to party too!"
Oy! I just heard some terrible news...It's a bleak day... Natalie Woods died 33 years ago today. Sorry for your pain.

ReplyDeleteI guess even a genius like Altman has to start somewhere. I have pretty low standards and even so I skipped through this. The acting is just excruciating.

ReplyDeleteI watched it twice. It is so ridiculous and absurd that it had to be intentional. We are talking about Robert Altman in 1956 (30 years old). If you only watched 10 minutes you should go back and watch the rest of it. The songs/music at the end of the film sound like something Garrison Keillor would have on his show, and the song "On Our Way to Mars" is hilarious.
This movie was only recently restored after having been discovered (in very deteriorated condition) by 3 film students. Some film society in Chicago spent $12,000 on the project. So there are recent reviews of it.

ReplyDeleteMy brother and I used to see pictures like this at odd hours on UHF stations, back in the days before cable.
ReplyDeleteMy brother would say:

That "library music" in back of the titles - I'll always remember that ... no matter what I do.
