So sorry to hear of Sam's passing, although we all knew it was coming. I am currently in Tokyo with very limited internet access. Will post my thoughts on Sam later in the week but wanted to acknowledge my deep sadness, great admiration, and great affection for the man.

ReplyDeleteSad news indeed, although far sadder for those who actually knew him. (Sorry for your loss, Ken.) He sounded like a great guy, or at least incredibly interesting and talented. By his own admission being a showrunner made him a monster, though. It's interesting to hear someone talk so candidly about such things, but we'll never hear the full stories now.
ReplyDeleteWhile I never met him, Sam Simon managed to give me some of the biggest and wittiest laughs in my entire life on shows like Taxi, Cheers, The Drew Carey Show, and The Simpsons. The warmth and residual glow from those laughs brightened my days and in many ways mad it easier to make it through some tough times. In many cases, he gave me a funny line to use that endures to this day.

While I know he was just a producer on it, I think "Coach In Love" is my all time favorite "Cheers" episode.
