Assuming I uploaded this right, here's another episode of ALMOST PERFECT starring Nancy Travis. It's called "El Pollo Loco" and it's one of my favorite episodes. Come back on Monday and I'll discuss the process that went into breaking the story, orchestrating the big stunt, and what we were attempting to accomplish. It's just like being in the writers room without anyone attacking you.
One thing: I still don't know how to edit so it starts with black and doesn't start until about 30 seconds in. But the good news is -- shortened blacks during commercial breaks!

Really funny! I can't wait to hear more on Monday. This really shows the difference between smart writing and the completely generic writing of some new sitcoms.

Thanks for this - I LOVED Almost Perfect. Until you had to fire Kevin Kilner... (it wasn't him I loved - it's just hard to do a romantic comedy without a male lead! Les Moonves is an idiot)

actually, there were two I really liked. Having watched a few minutes of this one so far, I have a feeling this is the other one. We shall see... (but the fun of the other one lasted longer)
ReplyDeleteWow... just remembered that this show premiered after the summer when I realized that if I was trying to write a story about an actor working in a sitcom, it might be nice if I had the first clue as to how sitcoms were made.
Oh, right: my fascination with the writers' room came later (and Blue Justice was not a sitcom). The sitcom in our story was sort of a cross between The Powers That Be and Murphy Brown (and maybe Duet - I was into the reruns at the time), from the eyes of the PR guy - who was far less neurotic and much more in control than Peter MacNicol's character, (Bradley Grist?).
Sadly, I didn't know anything about politics or DC, either. I watched Spin City that fall (odd I didn't know it was coming) and was sad when they wrote the girlfriend out.
I've learned a lot more about TV production since then, and I find it fascinating*. Politics still bore me to tears.
*although I will never be a creative type. (Speaking of "creative," I just found this great article about the Old Spice campaign's use of youtube and twitter)
yup. that was definitely "the other episode." :-) Amazing how I only remember one scene and I don't even remember that one right...

Please post the Almost Perfect episode "Good Grief". I saw it way back when it first aired and now support groups are so popular. I would love to view it again so I can laugh as much as I did then and relive that perfect show!
