One of the worst movies you'll ever see

And it was co-written by Robert Altman, no less. Thanks to blog contributor Hamid for turning me onto this 1956 gem. It stars Jerry Wallace (the singer of Primrose Lane). I defy you to last more than ten minutes. For your consideration this Oscar season -- "Corn's-A-Poppin'"

  1. Ken -- You should have challenged readers to list their 3 worst movies of all time. We could have had a HOWARD THE DUCK hate party.

Bear in mind that Altman was a proud cannabis consumer and that this movie should be appreciated with that in mind. Late at night with plenty of popcorn and pineapple soda.

  3. "The horror - the horror..."

I always knew there had to be something worse than 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'...

You didn't tell us it was an m-u-s-i-c-a-l! *

*I'm spelling it so that it won't ruin the surprise.

Ford Fairlane is guilty pleasure for me.
      It's booty time,
      booty time,
      across the USA.
      It's booty time,
      Booty time,
      Hey hey hey.

  6. Corniest thing I've ever seen!

Opinion of a nobody: It seems to me the creators of this movie achieved their goal---every scene/line/gesture is absurd.

Confession: I thought the premise was funny (a one half hour show entitled The Pinwhistle Hour).

Worse confession: I thought some of the lines were funny ("I've been eating this popcorn for years, it's sort of a hobby.")

  7. I saw Jerry Wallace about 26 years ago at a Parks and Rec center. Massive gut, good voice.

  8. You're welcome, Ken! It's awesome you've posted about this! Thanks!

There's something so bizarrely fascinating about how terrible it is. I first found out about it when I went to an event devoted to screening trashy trailers and kitsch TV commercials from back in the day. This one stood out and also "audience reaction" TV spots where people talked enthusiastically about how much they loved Critters 2 and Elm Street 2, one kid saying rather randomly "The Critters like to party too!"

  9. Oy! I just heard some terrible news...It's a bleak day... Natalie Woods died 33 years ago today. Sorry for your pain.

  10. Don't forget the bomb, "The First Nudie Musical" starring Cindy Williams, rep Laverne.

  11. I guess even a genius like Altman has to start somewhere. I have pretty low standards and even so I skipped through this. The acting is just excruciating.

  12. I'm sorry, but life is too short to waste an hour of it on that. I feel like somebody owes me for the ten minutes I spent on it.

  13. Needs a couple of badly built robots in silhouette at the bottom of the screen tossing out comments...

  16. Good Evening Snobs,

I watched it twice. It is so ridiculous and absurd that it had to be intentional. We are talking about Robert Altman in 1956 (30 years old). If you only watched 10 minutes you should go back and watch the rest of it. The songs/music at the end of the film sound like something Garrison Keillor would have on his show, and the song "On Our Way to Mars" is hilarious.

This movie was only recently restored after having been discovered (in very deteriorated condition) by 3 film students. Some film society in Chicago spent $12,000 on the project. So there are recent reviews of it.

  19. My brother and I used to see pictures like this at odd hours on UHF stations, back in the days before cable.

    My brother would say:
"People actually paid to see this?"

    And I'd say to him:
"People actually paid to make this!"

That "library music" in back of the titles - I'll always remember that ... no matter what I do.
