While this piece is 7 years old, I just found it as it was re-published today and - as it's about a radio personality - I thought some here might like:
"The Man Who Told A Christmas Story - What I learned from Jean Shepherd", by Donald Fagen, co-founder of Steely Dan. http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2008/12/the_man_who_told_a_christmas_story.single.html
"Happy Yule Log" on the Hallmark Channel pretty good last night/today. There was some entertaining tension between the dog and the cat, kind of a Sam and Diane vibe. Christmas Eve can be pretty entertaining if you avoid Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias and Jeff "cheaper than infomercials" Dunham.
Here's mine. Nat King Cole, my favorite singer of Christmas songs, singing "O Holy Night." Captures the meaning and mood of the season. The last few days I've been watching a lot of old TV Christmas specials - Bing, Danny, Perry - from the 60s and 70s. They all ended with the hope of "Peace on Earth." A half century later, we're still waiting - and hoping.
Never fails, EVERY year.....some sad Christmas songs and a coupla' Xmas Morning Brandy Capistrano Shooters.....and my mind naturally begins thinking of hockey and John Candy (a nice short article here :
And my favorite Christmas tune that surprisingly features TWO pics of Ms. Montgomery in the opening montage......WARNING : Santa sez you MUST play this on full screen and your speakers MUST be bouncing on your desk top, while dancing around the room is MANDATORY ;^)
Been a fan of this song since it was released. As an adult, it makes me cry. Anyway, Karen Carpenter was extremely underrated. It was not "cool" to like the Carpenters, but as an adult I hear the beauty of her voice. So sad she didn't have someone to guide her to a solo career. Janice B.
You are right, Mr. Postman was a cover, The Beatles in the mop top days did a mix of covers until maybe the Rubber Soul album. I believe when they stopped touring was the time they had enough material to where the albums would be made entirely of original material.
Every time I hear Karen Carpenter, I shake my head and say "What a waste". Such a voice and such a shame that press reports concerning her weight led her to killing herself.
My favourite Christmas song as well. Karen's voice was incredible and the lush harmonies were out of this world. Speaking of the Beatles, they did a killer cover of Ticket to Ride. Happy Holidays Ken.

I love that song. I liked the Carpenters even when it was uncool to like them. Anyone remember their version of the Beatle's Mr. Postman.
ReplyDeleteBig Beatles fan but they covered the song. Originally put out by Motown sung by the Marvelettes.

ReplyDeleteLoved Karen, what a voice! Jazz singer Jackie Ryan has a similar voice! Merry Christmas all!
