Looking forward to more 'tales from the trenches', your humorous take on the times and perhaps some insight, in the New Year, as to why some teams seem to reach the playoffs most years while for others it becomes a miracle.
Happy New Year Ken. Maybe this will brighten your day a bit. A few years ago in your blog you mentioned that you used the name Beaver Cleaver in one of your DJ gigs. The obvious double entendre was one of your reasons. I was surfing the web reasearching the Jack Benny TV show, and stumbled upon the fact that then child actor Harry Shearer's name on the show was Harry Beaver. Coincidence? I think not. I guess we've all got to get our minds out of the gutter.
Harry Shearer played "Frankie Bennett," a precursor of "Eddie Haskell" on the pilot film for "Leave it to Beaver". Don't believe everything you see online.
Don't forget, folks. The main event of 2018 will be Oprah getting the lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes. I'm probably understating it. She'll give a speech that will make it seem the main event of the 21st century.
I was surfing the web reasearching the Jack Benny TV show, and stumbled upon the fact that then child actor Harry Shearer's name on the show was Harry Beaver.
Shearer's character name on the Benny show was NOT "Harry Beaver." Shearer played one of several boys on the show who were members of the Beavers' Club, which was a Boy Scout-like group with which Benny was sometimes involved. The boys were in awe of Benny, who entertained them with very exaggerated tales of his athleticism and derring-do. Sites like imdb list Shearer's character name as "Harry Beaver" in some Benny episodes, but they are quite wrong.
I just listened to your latest podcast and I totally agree -- never had the slightest wish to stand in a crowd of drunks staring up at a shiny ball, even before Times Square became the most severely policed three acres this side of the Middle East. ABC is actually carrying Dick Clark reruns tonight. Well, Guy Lombardo once said, "When I go, I'm taking New Year's Eve with me," and it finally happened.
Enjoy the Rose Parade, the Beef Bowl and all the other things you celebrated, and please bring us another year of your amazing blog (the first thing I read every day). Happy new year!
I've never understood all the excitement about the arrival of another year. In ancient times, when it was doubtful if any given individual would live to see another year, and when people thought supernatural gods were responsible for recurring astronomical events, I can understand why there was reason to dance and jump and shout. But why now? What are we supposed to be celebrating?
However, thanks, Ken, for the New Year wish. And thanks, Peter, for including readers in your New Year wish. That was kind. I'm a regular reader and commenter, but I've decided to be anonymous today.
The Los Angeles Times radio highlights from 50 years ago today. KNX wasn't yet an all-news station -- and the all-sports format wouldn't arrive for another few decades, when New York's WFAN began -- but the station carried plenty of sports: The NFL title game (the famed Dallas-Green Bay "ice bowl") at 10:45 a.m., Kings hockey vs. first-year partner Philadelphia (IIRC, the Forum had just opened) at 4, and the Lakers at the expansion San Diego Rockets at 7. How were Lakers/Kings scheduling conflicts handled?
Happy New Year? Say goodbye to Du-par's in Studio City. Couldn't renegotiate their lease, meaning, I suspect, like many other establishments in the area, they were priced out of it. The restaurant owner, who said business was booming, hopes to find another location in Studio City. Can't imagine where that would be that isn't (even more) congested beyond belief. And who is moving in?...Sephora cosmetics. Sad.
I'm in a cheerful mood, so your comment made me chuckle. I'm not offended at all. I kinda get what you're saying. But have you never loathed a particular celebrity? Everyone has songs or shows they love to hate and also celebrities. I'm not obsessed with Oprah. I just find her to be a narcissist and her show was a platform for alternative health frauds to peddle their garbage. Plus, her need for recognition as an actress is amusing.
But ok, I'll try and chill out on mentioning her here. Except when she gives her Globes speech. At least allow me that. It's guaranteed to be hilarious.
Peter, I share your views regarding Oprah's self-centeredness. That was certainly evident, as Mr. Levine pointed out, during the CBS tribute program for Mary Tyler Moore last year.
I used to love it when Letterman's stagehands would read aloud from Oprah show transcripts.
As far as her acting roles, I thought she was good in "The Color Purple."

ReplyDeleteThanks Ken and wish you the same.
Just 11 months till the Democrats sweep the mid-terms! And before that, there's the continuing FBI investigation.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you too, Ken, and all readers.
Happy New Year to you, too, Ken. Thanks for doing what you do.

Peter,
😂😂😂😂
Those waiters will be chuffed. Highest honor for them.
I wish if only Ken will review, atleast Oprah's verbal diarrhoea.
Happy Whatchamacallit to all!
ReplyDeleteI think somebody's resolution should be to get psychological intervention for this ridiculous obsession he has with Oprah.
