I always thought girls named "Laura" were lucky. There's a gorgeous song named after "Laura." Same with Roseanna, Wendy, Nancy, Georgia, Mandy, Brandy, Carol, and even Sharona. For guys, Johnny and Bill, and Tom seemed to have cornered the market. No one ever sang a love song to "Ken."
Until now.
And what a hard-driving classic it is. This is from an early '60s Barbie album. I'm kinda hoping Katy Perry will do a cover. But until then, I'll have to be content with being the object of affection of a girl who hallucinates and has no genitals. What a fitting tribute.
Well, there was that Hall and Oates song, "I Ken go for that, no no no no no no Ken do," whatever that meant.
ReplyDeleteIt’s interesting to listen to this song and hear how much talent and skill went into the writing, arranging, playing, and singing of it, then note that all that effort was for...a promotional record for a doll. No wonder musicians drink.
ReplyDeleteWhat, you didn't like Ken Lee sung by the lady on Bulgarian Pop Idol?
ReplyDeleteOh, there is another one out there called The Ken Song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8coZ51YGlc&sns=em

ReplyDeleteKen, did you watch Sorkin's directorial debut?
I think "Turn that Heartbeat over Again" by Steely Dan is the only song with my name in it. Oh yea,"Michael Rowed The Boat Ashore".
ReplyDeleteAdore you, Ken, but the English Major brigade is marching in force this morning:
ReplyDeletePast tense of sing is "sang".
"No one ever SANG....,
not "sung."
Hah! When I was way younger my mom had me believing that "Michael Rowed The Boat Ashore" [#1 by The Highwaymen in 1961] had been written about me. Of course I was only 4 at the time. Wonder what else she lied to me about.....
ReplyDeleteRe: 20 Questions. I think a better answer as to why you won't read anyone's sitcom script would be the plagiarism issue. That is, you wouldn't want to be accused of stealing someone's "million dollar idea."
ReplyDeleteWhat song is about Wendy? The only one I can think of is that song by The Association, and that's WINDY, not Wendy.

ReplyDeleteHere's some news to end 2017.
Out of work Director and out of work Thespians come together for a movie. No one gives them money. Some assure, but back off. Finally a company agrees, but is now refusing to release the movie in theaters. Maybe for just 2 weeks for Oscar consideration - no guarantee.

Hoooo! How the mighty have fallen!!!
And can't they retire and lead a peaceful life? Why the need to beg for money, theatrical release for 2 weeks, Oscars.... How cringeworthy and painful it is to read this....
Wendy Grossman: The Beach Boys' "Wendy", for one.
ReplyDeleteCool being in a song. Sharona was a real person, the real daughter of a friend of mine. I'm going to look for a Jeff tune.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte Austin backed by the Daniel-Darby Orchestra, apparently she is still around.
ReplyDeleteOther 'Wendy' songs include 'Born To Run' by Bruce Springsteen and "Tomorrow Wendy" by Wall of Voodoo or Concrete Blonde.
ReplyDeleteThe other "Michael" song that comes to mind immediately is "Playground in my Mind" by Clint Holmes.
Mike Barer, there's the Bacharach/David tune "Message to Michael", a hit for Dionne Warwick.
ReplyDeleteI've got the somewhat depressing "Arthur" by The Kinks!
R.E.M.released a song in 1994 called "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?"
ReplyDeleteThe title was based on a bizarre incident in 1986 in which Dan Rather was attacked by two thugs who repeatedly asked him that question.
Wendy Grossman: Yhe Beach Boys led off their All Summer Long album (1964?) with "Wendy, Wendy what went wrong (oh so wrong)? We went together for so long..." A lovely song, it shows Beatles/George Martin influences on Brian Wilson.
ReplyDeleteA Friday question for you:
ReplyDeleteI just saw MASH "War of Nerves" (again, and again, and happily again), and I've always been curious about the bonfire at the end. There might not be much of an anecdote here, but - was it filmed at the ranch? Or elsewhere, for fear of starting a wildfire? Were there any logistical hurdles like that? (And now that I think about it, where did you get all that junk?)
This is crucial stuff here, Ken! How can we go on without knowing these vital tidbits???
Happy New Year everybody. May she be a damn sight better than the last, and may we all be home before she's over.

"Katy Perry Does Ken?"
ReplyDeleteWell, it would have novelty value at least.
