A hilarious news anchor faux pas

You'd like to think Edward R. Murrow would not have made this mistake. Here's WCAU Philadelphia anchor Lori Wilson reporting on "shaving her muff."  Don't they teach "muff" in journalism school?

  1. What made this so painful is that she obviously knew what she said and then dragged it out interminably.

  2. I won't mention the name, since I've never been able to find video proof of this, but, according to a Philly urban legend, one of our well-known hometown reporters once misread the prompter for a promo and described The Andromeda Strain as being about "an orgasm from outer space."

  3. This question is actually more for a previous post about failed pilots. On Criminal Minds, at the end of the episode when they show the production company credits, they show both CBS and ABC productions. With the show obviously aired on CBS, does this mean that it was originally developed for ABC but they passed and CBS picked it up? If so, would this go down as one of the most embarrassing of all "passes"?

  4. Hey Ken, any plans to see and review GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? It's getting great reviews, but I felt it was a bland disappointment. Was it just me? Wasn't the story dull, with no real stakes? And wasn't the 'comedy' actually not funny or clever at all?

It had a great cast, and some great ideas. It could have been wonderfully fun, exciting and irreverent, but instead it felt there'd been too many cooks in the kitchen.

I want to be wrong, and for it to have just been the mood I was in. If you liked it, then I'm definitely sure I missed something, because I'm usually kinder to the Marvel movies than you.

  5. I haven't seen it yet, Johnny.

  6. Gotta love Bill Henley's attempts to salvage the unsalvagable broadcast.

  7. Edit: "kinder" = "more forgiving"

Well I hope you do see it, Ken, and then share your thoughts. I just kept thinking things like, "that raccoon character could be hilarious" -- but I never laughed once. Everyone else seems to have loved it, though; it currently has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes!

  8. Good gravy. It's also #37 on the IMDb's Top 250 movies of all time -- just behind Spirited Away. I really need to see it again it seems.

  9. My take is that she knew she that she realized what she said and was merely trying to assure herself that it can be straigtened out.

  10. What's the big deal? Being that it's still summer, shaving one's ear muffs would keep one from getting too hot. Although, it would ruin them up for when they're really needed come winter.

  11. My take- no analization. Some things are just plain funny. That`s what I like.

  13. mmryan314, I think you just did another one with "analization."

  14. Watching TV people who can't ad-lib try to ad-lib is more painful than a root canal. Some people have it, most of them, like this couple, doesn't.

  15. When I worked in TV news, this was the favorite of our morning weatherman:

This guy makes Ron Burgundy look like a Girl Scout and Ted Baxter look like Ryan Seacrest.

  16. So, was the lady able to keep her job?

  17. Johnny: I haven't seen GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but obviously it's working for a lot of people. That said, if you didn't laugh at the humor, I can't imagine there's some magical explanation that will make you say, "Oh! NOW I get it! It's hilarious!" Until they invent objectively funny humor, that's just the way it is.

  18. Johnny:

I only liked the first two-thirds of GUARDIANS. I thought they were fun and quirky, like STAR WARS with a pinch of HITCHHIKERS, but the last act just seemed lazy and ripped straight from THE AVENGERS. More disaster porn with a pseudo-9/11 vibe. Nobody's wanted to make a 9/11 movie since it happened, but man...they're channeling the hell out of it. It's like execs think the only way to scare/threaten audiences is by using extra-terrestrial versions of al Qaeda, as if the Nazi archetype got old or something. If it did, it's certainly had enough time to let this other archetype get old, so I think we should go back to it.

  19. Probably planned.

  20. Ted G, your sense of perception is distorted or you're just too cynical.
