Check out these amazing singers

A little musical post for you today.  The group is Cubanos Acapella, the song is Hotel California (played to death on oldies stations), and wait'll you see what the guy in the red shirt does.  There must be some reality show these guys could win?

I love the way the guy in read is doing air guitar because he is mimicking the guitar and the guy on the end is doing air drum because he is mimicking drums. I guess it helps them get into character.

Curious if he had a device in his mouth to do the Don Felder/Joe Walsh solos. Towards the end they started to sound a little too much like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Actually the band is called Vocal Sampling. I've been a fan of theirs for about fifteen years now and while this is good, their originals and soneros are so much better.

Don't feed the troll. Just pity him that he wakes up every day stewing in the realization that he'll never achieve a trillionth of what Ken has accomplished in his life.

It certainly saves you the time and expense of having to learn to plan an instrument.

MikeK.Pa, the singer doesn't have something in his mouth to get the electric guitar sound, but he's also not doing it all naturally. There's an unseen seventh person who's contributing a lot to this performance: whoever is doing their sound mixing. The fuzz "guitar" is the singer hitting the notes but with added distortion. The munchkinization that you note is a sign of digital manipulation, using pitch-shifting to hit higher notes. Even earlier, the snare drum sound that the "drummer" creates is a little too perfect, with a nice isolated reverb. The fact that each singer has a separate microphone means that an effect can be added to each one completely separate from the others. And none of this is to take anything away from the performers -- this still took a lot of work to learn, and takes a lot of work to execute properly on stage. They're just getting a little help. Ken, you must know some sound people. I'd be curious to hear what a professional has to say about this clip.

Ken, there is indeed a reality show right up their alley: The Sing-Off. Hopefully they get to do another season/special again.

Between watching that show and a few minutes of Michael Winslow you'll come to realize that any of those sounds can be done without help. Which isn't to say one way or the other what is going on in that video but only to say it's certainly possible.
