EP261: Inside the David Letterman Show

Steve Young, who wrote for Dave for 25 years, leads us through what life was like on the Letterman Show.  Great behind-the-scenes look at a TV icon. Steve also offers terrific tips for young writers trying to break into late night comedy.

Still can't find new episodes on Spotify. Any updates on the technical issues you touched on earlier?

We got to see a letterman show in New York and it was a great experience. To me the most interesting thing was that before the show Dave would come out without his jacket on and talk to the audience and ask them what's going on and kind to get to know them a little and then you would hear the band playing the opening theme song. He was still on stage, he would casually pick up his jacket and walk off stage as the opening was just about over and then five seconds later the curtain opened in there he was.

Enjoyed the interview, and then watched Bathtubs Over Broadway.

That was some wild stuff. I've always wondered why Dave stopped Viewer Mail. Loved that weekly segment. Perhaps Mr. Young would have had the answer. Maybe next time.

You mentioned in the interview having lunch with David Letterman and Merrill Markoe, which is a story I don't think you've ever mentioned on the blog. How did that come about?

I am also curious about Letterman's relationship with Carson. Obviously, they respected each other, but their styles were quite different. I always saw Letterman as the anti-Carson, having cheap sets, silly guests and segments, wearing unstylish clothes, and it worked when he was on after Carson. When he moved to 11:30, Letterman at least updated his wardrobe, but he never tried to create the atmosphere that Carson did. I was surprised to hear Steve Young say that Letterman was willing to relocate to Los Angeles just to be like Carson.
