Space helmet on, O' Captain Video

Here's another classic clip from THE HONEYMOONERS. Ralph and Norton share a television set. At the time, the big kids' program was CAPTAIN VIDEO. Gleason's take just kills me. I've seen it a gazillion times, it always makes me laugh.

Hmm... I wonder why shows like Captain Video, It's About Time, Run Buddy Run, and Rango never get recycled by TV Land or some other network.

Oh. Right.

Now I remember...

The reason Captain Video never gets recycled by TV Land is that of the several hundred episodes that were made, a mere six remain available to watch -- and none of them are broadcast quality. This is a true "lost" show.

A great lesson in getting the details right. If Gleason had left out the first bit, glancing at Carney then back at the paper, it would have been about one-tenth as funny. Or to put it another way, it would have been the kind of thing you see on most sitcoms today. And of course his timing is perfect.

cage free brown: there is a documentary on Tex Avery now on YouTube. It was made in Britain in 1988 and features interviews with Chuck Jones and June Foray among others. And speaking of timing: Tex Avery would sometimes cut individual frames from the negative in order to improve the timing of a gag.
