Okay, this is one of those fun survey things I like to do from time to time. On our SitcomRoom Twitter we asked the question “What’s your favorite all-time sitcom?” Got a wide range of answers. Some very unexpected. So now I thought I’d open it up and ask all of you guys.I’ll be interested to see if most of your favorites are recent, vintage, multi or single camera.
One rule: Do not feel compelled (not that you would) to name shows I’ve worked on. You don’t get extra credit for listing JOE & SONS.
I imagine we’ll have some foreign sitcoms listed too. That’s great. Some will be from shows I’ve never heard of and I will make a concerted effort to find and watch them. I did that a couple of years ago when someone recommended the British version of COUPLING and it is now in my top 5.
For us Americans, I’m sure there are some undiscovered gems out there. And for people in Europe, if you’ve never seen MAMA’S FAMILY are you in for a treat!
I might have told you mine already but I will again. THE HONEYMOONERS. In a later post I’ll explain why.

Red Dwarf
Coupling (UK)
Sports Night
Big Bang Theory
WKRP
Gee, am I the only person here who still watches and loves fresh episodes of THE SIMPSONS?
It seems to be very hip to knock its later seasons, but I just don't see why. Still a great show. Still makes me laugh at every new spisode. There's a new one in a little while. I'll be watching it.
"BTW, in CHARLEY'S AUNT, don't you love Jack's elaborately fake British accent, which consists of once in a while using a short vowel A (ahhh) instead of the long vowel (a), and otherwise just speaking as he always did, not to mention passing himself off as an Oxford undergrad when he was in his 40s?"
I always thought he tried to do too much in the movies: as has been well documented, on his shows, both radio and tv, he was the BUTT of the joke; with Charleys, Horn Blows, and to some extent To Be or Not to Be they switched it up and tried to have him be the funny man. While he was an extremely funny man, I think the disconnect between what we expected from Jack...vain, parsimonious, cowardly...and what we got in some of those was bizarre.
And yes, his teen turn in that one was...well....disturbing. And awesome.
Oh I wasn't criticizing Jack's work in CHARLEYS AUNT. (I have the DVD also) I think the brazeness of his non-accent and his being two decades too old for the role were all part of the joke.
But generally, Jack in movies wasn't as great as Jack on the radio and TV. (Barry Humphries is another comic giant who doesn't seem to fully work right in movies.) My favorite of Jack's films remains BUCK BENNY RIDES AGAIN, where he is playing his radio persona, and Rochester gets to sing "I'M AN OLD COWHAND" and dance divinely.
