The early 1970s is being deleted from cultural history so I doubt the young folks have even heard of the Woody Allen movies you listed.
On the other hand I saw The Ten Commandments for the millionth time last night. Which character exclaims "Moses, Moses, Moses"? All of them!

Not by choice, really. It's just that it's always playing on TBS or TNT, it seems, and for some reason, I just leave it on.

This question turned out to be much harder, and my list much shorter, than I thought, since I only included movies that I am positive I've seen more than three times. If the question had been movies I have seen three times or more, or if I had included movies I THINK I've seen more than three times, the list would have been somewhat longer, with several Woody Allen and Hitchcock movies especially.

Tequila Sunrise--Criminally overlooked Robert Towne film. Mel Gibson is endearing and Michelle Pfieffer beautiful. Beach is uncredited co-star.

My Favorite Year--Might be Peter O'Toole's best role. Classic old school comedy script.

Top Gun, Dirty Dancing--Just for the visuals and music.

How about Name a Movie you've seen more than three times even though it's in a language you don't understand and it's not got subtitles? That would be the Seventies Romanian musical Eu, Tu si Ovidiu.

It started with a weird, high camp, East German science fiction film, In the Dust of the Stars, that I saw over Christmas. We're talking proper high camp here. Leather jump suits, snakes on the dining table, thousands of slaves mining rocks with their bare hands, and a incredibly evenly male to female balance in the nipple count. Lots of clips on You Tube if you're interested, including the usual compilations of the kinkiest bits from the local weirdo.

Doing some background reading I learned that one of the women was married to a pretty senior minister in Ceaucescu's government, and she said in an interview that one of her films had been memorable to her for the problewms they'd had picking a bathing suit for her. She was apparently a bit too busty, and Elena Ceaucescu was a little jealous. Hence came the command from on high "No Bikini".

In the circumstancesm what else would anyone do but watch it. And watch it again. And again. It's bizarre, because the plot is pretty cheesy, the songs are unbelievably bland, and the choreography seems to be inspired by a school disco. Maybe it's the trouser suits. Anyone else tempted

That isn't a big distinction nowadays, is it? If I like a movie, I'll see it more than once on Netflix...or I'll buy it and see it anytime I want.

But I'll choose three modern-ish movies that are aren't on the "timeless classics" list: "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Descendants," and "The Big Year." I saw them for the first time on cable and wound up buying them. Well-made, well-acted stories that please immediately and become even more satisfying on repeated viewings.

I find this a rather odd question, because there's probably 100 movies that I've seen more than 3 times. I mean, there are a few dozen movies I've seen more than 20 or 30 times. Isn't that normal for people who watch/buy movies and have favorites?

The ones that come to me immediately are It's A Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th St, Three Days of the Condor, You've Got Mail, Swingers, Back To The Future, L.A. Confidential, Rio Bravo, Ocean's Eleven (the remake), The Day The Earth Stood Still and all of the Connery Bonds.

Ben Scripps said...

There doesn't appear to be anything in the rules about repeating movies others have mentioned, but it wouldn't really be adding anything for me to say "Airplane!" or "Take the Money and Run" or any of the other dozens on my list, but a couple...

What is CLUE? (Sorry, Ken--to me, there is nothing in this universe funnier than Madeline Kahn's explanation of her hatred of another character: "It-It...the f--it...flame...flames. Flames...on the side of my face. Breathing. Breathle--heaving breaths. Heaving.")

What is BEAUTY AND THE BEAST? (True story: I've seen this one in the theatre 21 times. And I have no kids. It's great animation, writing and music, and it played at the dollar theater near where I grew up all summer long.)

Too many to think of & list, but I'll settle for the first movie that I know I've seen at least three times: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Part of the reason for my incessant search for repeat viewings (which wasn't easy for a 13-year-old in the late 1960s, even though the movie popped up here and there in theaters for several years after its spring 1968 release) was that I was lucky enough to see it in Cinerama the first time - at the Fox theater in center-city Philadelphia, gone since 1980 - and was probably trying to replicate that experience. The last time 2001 came to the AFI Silver Theatre near my home, I took one of my daughters (then also 13 or 14) - it's still an amazing achievement; they have a very nice print, from the 25th-anniversary rerelease, I think.

(I've still never seen it on home video. Some films demand this.)

Every Marx Brothers movie, even Love Happy and The Big Store.
All Godfather movies.
Bride of Frankenstein plus all the rest of Universal's Frankenstein/Dracula/Wolfman serieses.
North By NorthWest, Vertigo and Psycho (I've watch that trio more than three times within the last year alone.)
Most of Hitchock's other good movies. (In other words not Under Capricorn, The Wrong Man, or I Confess.)
All Harry Potter movies.
Most of Disney's animated features made when Disney was still alive.
Every feature film made by George Pal.
Most of WC Fields's output, same for Mae West, and Keaton's silent features.
Most Hammer horror movies to have Peter Cushing and Sir Chrsitopher Lee and directed by Terence Fisher.
Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
All Ray Harryhausen features except The Animal World. (I rewatched all of Ray's features with that exception again, in chronological order when he died last year.)
The first five James Bond movies, and the most recent three.
The Hound of the Baskervilles with Rathbone.
The Wizard of Oz.
Lon Chaney's The Phantom of the Opera
Sons of the Desert and Way Out West and most of Laurel & Hardy's other Hal Roach output.
Auntie Mame.

Frankly, there are easily 1000 movies that would go on this list, but I have a guest coming over for brunch.

What is...

"My Man Godfrey" (1936)? (I add the date because a pointless remake was made in 1957, with June Allyson proving herself way too small to fill Carole Lombard's shoes and David Niven -- who had a supporting role in a 1938 "Lux Radio Theater" adaptation of "Godfrey" -- unsuccessfully trying to pull off William Powell.)

"Libeled Lady"? (Powell, Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow, Spencer Tracy...plus Bill's classic fishing scene.)

"The Apartment"? (Shut up and deal.)

"The Crowd"? (A King Vidor classic; imagine "It's A Wonderful Life" as a silent and without the 1940s sanctimony.)

"The Smiling Lieutenant"? (The Lubitsch touch, culminating in this outrageous duet of "Jazz Up Your Lingerie" with Claudette Colbert and Miriam Hopkins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdHbEnTBzKs)

"Twentieth Century"? (The film that made Lombard a star, with help from John Barrymore and director Howard Hawks.)

"Citizen Kane"? (It is to cinema what Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring" is to classical music, though it never caused riots.)

"Topper" (1937)? (The original, with the delightful Roland Young as Cosmo Topper, Cary Grant coming into his own as a star, and Constance Bennett as one sexy ghost; she was also in its underrated sequel, "Topper Takes A Trip.")

"Girl Shy"? (My favorite Harold Lloyd film, even more so than "Safety Last!" -- a clever storyline, superb gags and a brilliant multimodal chase sequence using everything from chariots to streetcars that lets us see Los Angeles in 1924.)

It's interesting to see whose taste chimes with one's own and whose doesn't. Everything on Pat Getter's list, for example, is on my "Seen More than 10 Times" list, except Creature With the Atom Brain, for which once was somewhat more than enough, whereas there is not one single film on Cap'n Bob's list I've seen more than once, and of his 12 listed films, there are 9 I've never seen at all. (I habitually avoid any movie with John Wayne in it.)

RCP, yup, Sextette is hallucinatory at best, incredibly bad movie that I nonetheless watch every so often, as its amazing for all the wrong reasons. And Skidoo, Groucho's last movie, is, believe it or not, even worse.

Is easier to get to know someone by compelling lists of likes and dislikes and checking for compatibility, or to listen to anecdotes from their life?

I've watched quite a few movies three or more times, but of those which ones would I watch tonight if they were available?

What are:

Casablanca
The Maltese Falcon
The Big Lebowski
Pulp Fiction
The Pink Panther
San Francisco ("Play it Blackie's way!" Clark Gable is much more of a rogue than in GWTW)
Snatch (probably Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, too).

My fiance and I were on the couch last night, zoning after a busy Easter. And I flipped over to "For Love of the Game". And I told her, the best part of this movie is listening to Vin Scully. He's considered the best baseball announcer of all time. And I was reminded that I say this everytime we watch this movie.

Re: the topic. Way too many to mention. Most of the ones mentioned above me would be on my list.

Lawrence of Arabia was re-released in 1989 with various bits edited back in, and it played in its 70mm glory here and there for the next couple of years. I saw it three times then, and then a fourth time in 1999 at theater on Westwood Blvd. that was showing it as part of Columbia Pictures 75th anniversary. I've never watched it on a TV screen.

Abba Dabba: I'm sure most who come here are American, and most Americans see only English-language films. Sometimes it's an issue of availability -- few foreign-language films run here, they rarely play on TV, and people on a budget aren't going to pony up to blind-buy the DVDs/Blu Rays. Just for you, here are some foreign-language films I've seen at least three times (I'm honestly not sure why I left off before; I guess because so few others were including them):

Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau)
I Vitelloni (Fellini)
Nights of Cabiria (Fellini)
Smiles of a Summer Night (Bergman)
The 400 Blows (Truffaut)
Grand Illusion (Renoir)
The Rules of the Game (Renoir)
The Wages of Fear (Clouzot)
Rashomon (Kurosawa)
The Bicycle Thief (De Sica)
L'Avventura (Antonioni)
8 1/2 (Fellini)
Shall We Dance? (Suo)
The Dreamlife of Angels (Zonca)

Mike: So you watched a movie you hated three times in order to hear a hit song you could access in any number of other ways? Or maybe you couldn't find it because you were searching for "The DiMaggio Song" instead of "Mrs. Robinson."
