My Sports Illustrated article is on the newsstands now

I was honored to write a piece for SPORTS ILLUSTRATED on the great Dave Niehaus, the beloved voice of the Seattle Mariners (and my partner).

It appears in their tribute to Seattle baseball edition, which you can find here.

My oh my, Dave was the best -- on and off the air.

Wonder if anyone knows how many times Dave sang "Wabash Cannonball"??

After all those years of terrible teams. You got to thinking that you and Dave were the only Mariner fans left. You would listen to that booming voice all over the NW. In your fishing boat,or at your bbq grill. People would poke fun if you had the Mariners on the radio. In 1995 when Jr slide across home plate I was there! The energy that shot thru the Kingdom was something I never felt and probably never will again. And after uncontrolled screaming and hugging for what seemed like a good 15 minutes. When the energy was starting to wind down. Someone got a TV camera on Dave and put him up on the jumbo scoreboard and everyone went nuts again!! Obviously there was 50,000 people that felt exactly like I did. Everyone felt that at some point, you and Dave were the only Mariner fans left. The crowd roar for Dave was every bit as loud as when Jr slide across home plate 15 minutes earlier....

I remember the day he died. I think of it as the day it rained tears in Seattle.

Hmmm. Normally I only ever buy the Swimsuit Edition, but I'll consider making an exception in this case.

Haven't bought a magazine in a long, long time. Gonna buy this one. I am flying to Florida this weekend and will pick it up at SeaTac (since how often does one pass a newsstand?

By the way, the robot detector is getting really annoying again. I had to go through three screens for one comment and then had to do it again for the next comment, as though my computer had suddenly been taken over by a robot in three minutes.

I'll track it down, Ken. Here's another (wonderful) tribute to Dave Niehaus by Seattle boy and Mariner fan Macklemore. I'm sure you've seen it, but check it out if you haven't. He name drops a couple of radio stations, including KJR.

I appreciate your kind words so much.

Now am considering the high probability that you already have in reserve an obit for the irreplaceable Vin Scully. A possibility that I am not able to consider at this time.

I bought it and it's a great keepsake. They could have left out the article on A-Rod, but he is a part of the M's heritage. You know it was after The Big Unit, Griffey, and A-Rod left that the M's had their 116 win season. Maybe it was because of that. The organization was able to build around the three of them.
