How television benefits your children

I thought you might enjoy these actual magazine ads from Don Draper's day.   Noted without comment except to say, JESUS EFFIN' CHRIST!!?"  And unlike April Fools jokes -- these are REAL.

I wish I could enlarge these to figure out why Kukla and Ollie would be big draws fora cruise line. I think the guy fondling them is their real puppeteer? And where is Fran?

How are my bowels? It occurs to me I've never asked myself that question before.

And if there's a pill I can take that will keep me from ever having to ask myself that question again I'll take it. So, good ad.

My answer to the "How are your bowels?" ad would be "Go in that bathroom I just came out of and you'll find out".

That first ad really sucks.

I pulled it onto my desktop and magnified it. Resolution isn't high enough to render it all legible but the box identifies the puppeteer as Burr Tillstrom and seems to plug the TV show. Fun to imagine Kukla dealing with drunken hecklers on the third or fourth night in the lounge.

Well, this settles the matter: I am replacing all previously used greetings with the phrase "How are your bowels?" If it was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me.

I've seen several of these in my one saved copy of LIFE, the December 1963 JFK assassination edition. Just curious, was that possibly your source?

Oh, my GOD! Do you mean to tell me that people's beliefs and attitudes in the past weren't always exactly the same as our beliefs and attitudes today?!?! Why hasn't someone told me this before??

Ken... some of these ads are fake (like the "Wives" ad). You can tell by the fonts and other clues. So many fake ads going around the web. It's amazing what you can do with Photoshop and other tools.

Friday question: I just watched the Modern Family episode Five Minutes where all the scenes last for five minutes. Have you seen it? Thoughts? I didn't even notice the title until after I had watched it so I didn't get what they were trying to do. I didn't exactly notice that the scenes were long but both I and the others I watched with remarked that the episode boring and seemed off somehow.

Yes, the man in that photo is the real Burr Tillstrom, creator and puppeteer of Kukla and Ollie. We was reportedly VERY protective of his puppets, and wouldn't let other people handle them.

Friday question:

Would love your input on classic shows digitized for DVD but missing or incomplete on iTunes. Examples: TAXI not available ALL IN THE FAMILY only seasons 1-4 THE HONEYMOONERS not available MASH not available. The list goes on. We learned from DVD that low demand meant not economical for a release but with iTunes why does it matter? Ultimately is it iTunes not wanting to bother or is the issue more with who holds the rights? P.S. Add ALMOST PERFECT to the list, I believe you said it's digitized.

It's a gay cruise so Fran would be out of place me thinks.

Fran might have been out of place, but Burr? Not so much. Burr was elected to the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame four years ago, a long-overdue honor.

Fran often went on vacation during the run of Kukla, Fran & Ollie, which of course was a live show. I don't remember how they handled it when Burr went. Maybe he never did.

I wanted to boldly claim that some of these were fake... but from the research I've done, they seem shockingly real. Even the Pep Cereal one. Wow.
