Any thoughts on the Bel-Air drama reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? It might seem like a silly idea to turn a multi-camera sitcom shot on tape in the 90s into a gritty Los Angeles single-camera drama, but is it necessarily a bad creative exercise? How does it hold up comparing to other reboots?

Hi Ken,

My name is Katherine and I’m a Television Writing & Producing student at Columbia College Chicago. I’m doing a networking assignment for my TV Program Development class where we ask our favorite creators in the industry about their job. I’m a huge fan of Cheers and have previously read and enjoyed your blog. Would you mind taking a few minutes to answer some questions for me?

If you’re interested, please message me on Twitter (@spongeworthie) or email me (katherinetalbott.college@gmail.com).

I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

FRIDAY QUESTION: Have you ever had or seen difficulties assembling a writing staff?

Thanks. I remember a documentary series on TCM about the history of MGM. At the end, they showed footage of the bulldozers demolishing the backlot- that was so sad to see.

Mostly unrelated item- today I learned the current interim leader of Canada's Conservative Party is a woman named Candice Bergen. Really.

At least the lady who played Lois in Superman was still working in the business. Perhaps she also did a limited amount of screen work.

Alan Smithee is a generic term for a pseudonym used where someone doesn't want his real name credited on a project, but still wants whatever profit participation comes due. Harlan Ellison's pseudonym, Cordwainer Bird, might have more screen credits than Harlan Ellison.

In the podcast you said you (and David) almost took your names off the Volunteers script after a god-awful rewrite by another writer. Do you and/or David have an Alan Smithee-type pseudonym? Have you ever used it?
