EP106: Ken’s writing partner, David Isaacs defends himself

Ken welcomes his long-time writing partner, David Isaacs to the podcast. We discuss how we broke in, how we work, writing together vs. separately, script problem solving, and David tells his side of the prank I pulled on him.

More of a Friday "comment" than question...would love to your thoughts: I fear we will soon arrive at the day when no quality shows have seasons longer than 10-13 episodes. So many great moments and supporting character explorations come when they need to do 22.

This podcast would be totally worth breaking into someone's house to use their computer to listen to it. I'm sure it contains more than my fair share of useful information. Unfortunately, I don't have the time. I have to go up onto my roof to patch a leak. (It's raining here in Los Angeles.)

Nice podcast!

Friday Question:

Did you guys think of creating an animated series like The Simpsons?

This was so good, and so funny, and so, well, loving. I don't recall hearing about the split writing of your episodes before, but the rationale was excellent and caring. That the two of you share more than just a working partnership was very clear. This might be my favorite episode. (Also, David's got a good radio voice.)

I love the story about making your own outlines of MTM shows. It amazes me how many people don't do basic research on a potential employer, even when doing so costs them nothing. There was once a person interviewing for a job at our all-news radio station. The applicant asked us, "So, do you ever do sportscasts on this station?" And the manager replied, "Yes, at :15 and :45 past every hour, just like it says on our promos." This person clearly had not bothered to listen to even one half-hour of our programming.

I'd enjoy hearing the two of you talk about the writing process every week.

Amusing because my first apartment on N. Martel, around the corner and up the street from Guitar Center on Sunset, was one room and my Mom and Dad came and had a similar reaction to David’s mom. And my Dad hated L.A. traffic and everything but said one of the funniest things he ever said. My dad was a conservative evangelical doctor, deacon, so on and so forth and just around the corner on Sunset was a place which is now gone but for years and years had the “25 cent live nudes” sign out front and I presume was delivering same inside. And my dad sees this (Mom was not with us) and says, “Live nudes. Good choice.” Of course, as a doctor, he’d seen a lot of the dead ones. I never laughed so hard at anything he said and it’s stayed with me all these years.
