Not all TV theme songs were great

Even though I had a crush on Sally Field and watched this show religiously, the main title theme song always made me want to vomit. It is sooo cloying and syrupy, and...ugh!!! I know one commenter thought it was his favorite so I may get some flack here but still...ugh!!!

A mismatch, a near-trainwreck. Worst of all, a missed opportunity. Gidget was a rock and roll babe -- and theme steals the opening riff of British crooner Matt Munro's "My Kind of Girl."

It was 1965. Couldn't Screen Gems or ABC toss a couple of shekels at Brian Wilson, Jan Berry or Sloan & Barri and have them come up with something to fit the image?

I agree, not a good candidate for the time capsule.

By contrast, how about the Dobie Gillis theme? There were a few sitcoms that went for that scat-singing vocal jazz (I Married Joan in the 1950s, and I seem to remember The Cara Williams Show around this same time). I think I liked Dobie the best of them, though the series wore out its welcome for me after a couple of seasons.

It is proof that not everything from the Brill Building was a gem...Columbia Pictures (Screen Gems' parent) bought Aldon Music in 1963, acquiring the output of legendary songwriting teams like Goffin/King, Mann/Weil. Pomus/Shuman, etc. GIDGET's theme was created by Howard Greenfield (who usually worked with Neil Sedaka) and Jerry Keller (who was one of the few of that collective with no regular creative partner, but joined with someone else when an idea came along or a tune was required).

The music by itself isn't bad at all, but the lyrics are lame. And as others said, it isn't right for this show.

Paul,

Howie Greenfield was primarily a lyricist (and a darned good one). Don't blame him -- it's the melody and more annoyingly, the arrangement. That theme song could have rocked, instead of shuffling as it did.

How can you like the Patty Duke theme but not Gidget? So similar, to me. I love 'em both.

Gidget...they liked her, they really liked her!

I think Gidget liked the hot dog that Moondoggy was serving up! Didn't you wonder why she always had a smile on her face?

I liked the Mod Squad theme, and also Room 222 - I was around 8 when these were airing, but can remember just about every note.

Um... I felt that way about the Cheers theme, actually.
