Chris-Misc.

I miss Darlene Love singing her Christmas song on LETTERMAN.

Letterman now looks like Santa Claus.

Subway is still open if you’re hungry.

Remember when the Lakers playing on Christmas was a big deal?

Please don’t dress up your pets like Santa or elves and post them on Facebook.

“Don’t shoot your eye out.”

You just don’t get the same great store windows with Amazon.

Live Nativity Scenes give me the creeps.

My bold prediction: STAR WARS tops the boxoffice this weekend.

Ham retains water. I’m just sayin’.

You realize most of the classic Christmas songs were written by Jewish composers?

My favorite Scrooge is McDuck.

“Say the magic word, say Mission Pack
And it's on its merry way
No gift so bright, so gay, so right
Send a Mission Pack magic way”

It must be an LA thing, but WHAT IN GOD'S NAME IS A MISSION PACK?

Saw the latest Star Wars on Sunday, Jumanji on Monday. Jumanji was packed, Star Wars less so. Oh and Star Wars was politically correct crap - lets introduce a black female character to sort out the problem of having a black male lead and a white female lead, and lets bring back a load of "fan favourites" from earlier movies - and Jumanji was terrific entertainment.

Here are a couple of clips that will make Christmas all the more memorable.

And the Dodgers holiday greeting was great because of Joe Davis calling him "Uncle Orel" and an appearance from the one, the only.

The recent FX adaptation of Christmas Carol with Guy Pearce as (admittedly an admirable) Scrooge included several F bombs, which we can all probably agree were sorely missing from the original Dickens text.

Mission Pack was a company that sold candied California fruits, especially dates in nicely designed packages from Indio area and was often sent to relatives back East to show them what they were missing in the frigid east coast.

The time of year when local stations used to trot out vintage "kiddie" films: "March of the Wooden Soldiers" (What is Christmas without the Bogey Men?), "Jack and the Beanstalk" (Abbott and Costello), "Hansel and Gretel" (the stop-motion one), "The Snow Queen" (dubbed Russian cartoon introduced by Art Linkletter), "Alakazam the Great" (comedy anime?), either of the Fleischer animated features ("Gulliver's Travels" and "Hoppity Goes to Town") and maybe a Robert Youngson compilation like "When Comedy Was King". This was back when a kid had precious few opportunities to see them. Why don't we have a cable channel for those, instead of all those Hallmark romances and increasingly weird riffs on Santa Claus ("Mrs. Claus's Ex-Con Brother")?

That said, Compliments of the Season to One and All.

As Gumby would say, "Merry Christmas, Dammit!"

Mike Bloodworth:
Kwanzaa is an African-Americans celebration of life from 26 December to 1 January. Dr. Maulana Karenga introduced the festival in 1966 to the United States as a ritual to welcome the first harvests to the home. Dr. Karenga created this festival for Afro-Americans as a response to the commercialism of Christmas.

December 26 is not that far off. You might learn something...........

Mission Packs I guess are similar to like the citrus fruits [oranges, grapefruits, etc.] that everyone in Florida sent to us once we moved north. Guess they thought we were living in Russia during the Communist days when Getting a banana once a decade was considered decadent. Didn't do me any good, since I have a fucked up digestive system, eating anything with citric acid was basically the same as pouring Draino down my throat.

For the fifth year in a row Darlene Love performed her song on The View.
She also announced that the program would now be her "new home":

Darlene Love: Phooey. Went to see her a couple of Octobers ago. Her advance p.r. said she always sings "Christmas Baby" (as she calls it) no matter what time of year it is. Well, she stood up there after the first song and said she wasn't going to sing it, but that we could all come see her again "in a couple of weeks" if we wanted to hear it. People were complaining in the lobby at intermission, one of them saying rather loudly that it was like Elvis showing up and refusing to sing "Hound Dog." I was holding out hope that Ms. Love would surprise us with "Christmas Baby" as an encore, thus winning the crowd. Nope. Most of her list was new and completely unfamiliar songs from her then-recent CD, available in the lobby. No sale here.
