Time we'll never get back

We hear all the time that we spend a third of our lives sleeping. What about other precious time?

How much time that we’ll never get back do we spend…

Idling at intersections?

Waiting in doctors’ waiting rooms?

Trying on clothes we don’t wear?

Going through TSA inspections?

Re-reading paragraphs of books we’ve already read?

Talking to phone solicitors?

Sitting through commercials before movies start?

Waiting on the line for tech support?

Waiting in line at Starbucks?

Sitting on tarmacs?

Watching the little spinning beach ball?

Waiting for rock concerts to begin?

Channel surfing?

Reading bad jokes people email us?

Sending bad jokes to others?

Wrapping presents?

Stuck in traffic?

Playing Angry Birds?

Watching bad movies because we paid to see them?

Standing at bus stops?

Scrolling through Facebook postings of your friends’ adorable pets?

Reading this blog?

Nah, reading this blog is never a waste of time. You either learn something or have a laugh. Sometimes both.

The little spinning beach ball is a killer. When you're dying and your whole life flashes before your eyes, that revolving multi-coloured bastard will easily take up a third of the flashback.

Aw, Ken, I never resent the time I spend reading this blog.

The rest, I minimize by either reading through it or hanging up. Attending many shows on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe taught me it's better to walk out on anything that's not worth your time.

Augh! I read this and now there's 33 seconds of my life I will never get back! Still, good though. :)

Reading your blog does not belong, it is entertaining and informative. Facebook? Definitely!

Time spent waiting for a check or a table in restaurants, waiting in line for the bathroom at events, or waiting in Seattle traffic.

I never consider sleeping or reading this blog as time wasted. If I could do both at once, then I'd be happy.

One more vote for your blog not being a waste of time -- if it was, I wouldn't read it. (But it was a nice way to end the post.)

Coincidentally, I was thinking about this a little bit over the weekend, about how we all know our days are limited and yet usually conduct ourselves as if we've got forever.

I really need to improve my weekends.

Before I read anyone else's comments:

Time spent reading this blog is NEVER wasted. I may not be interested in the topic, I may just skip that's day's post, but I always check, and I almost always read -- you are still a great writer, even in blog form, and your commenters are witty and interesting in their own right.

Ken, it was very wise for you to omit tossing-off as another waste of time. In fact, it's one of the few self-contained activities I always find most satisfying, and with hardly any regrets.
